LG Volt review: $100 smartphone offers 4G LTE for tight budgets

You won't find much in the way of frills, but the budget-priced LG Volt offers LTE connectivity.

The LG Volt offers great battery life and LTE connectivity for a paltry sum.

Dull, uninspired hardware and a low-res screen are the causalities of that low price. Call quality is also disappointing.

Affordable LTE connectivity and a long-lasting battery may be hampered by meager call quality, but the low price tag just might sway the right folks.

LG Volt review

We see a lot of budget smartphones here at CNET (see our roundup of best no-contract phones for $250 or less , for example), and they all straddle that fine line between cutting costs and delivering a satisfying amount of functionality. The LG Volt is...

LG Unify (Virgin Mobile)

The LG Unify is an inexpensive LTE phone that goes the distance, but cuts too many corners on performance.

Inexpensive for an LTE phone. Good battery life.

Obsolete version of Android. Poor voice quality. Poor camera. No Spark.

Competition and Conclusions We primarily recommend LTE phones nowadays. Sprint's 3G network is so slow as to be almost unusable, and its LTE network is spreading. The future is LTE. Since the Unify is Virgin Mobile Custom's only LTE phone, this is the...

LG Volt (Boost Mobile)

The LG Volt smartphone shines on Boost Mobile thanks to its beefy battery, Spark LTE compatibility, and affordable price.

Well-built. Android 4.4. Supports Spark LTE. Big battery. Built-in IR emitter.

Mediocre display and cameras. Low internal storage.

Conclusions While the Lucid 3 was simply another entry-level option in a sea of subsidized phones on Verizon, the quality and breadth of options on Boost elevate the Volt above its Verizon counterpart. $180 gets you a modern Android smartphone with...

LG 200 (Virgin Mobile)

The LG 200 offers basic voice calls and texting at a virtually unbeatable price, thanks to Virgin Mobile's prepaid plans.

Good voice quality. Comfy keyboard. Cheap payLo plans. Loud speakerphone.

Dim, washed out screen. Bungled Bluetooth. Useless camera. No music player.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions There's not much here in terms of apps, but the LG 200 is a serviceable messaging device. It has a combination Java-based e-mail and IM client that hooks into Yahoo, AOL, Windows Live, and Gmail, plus IMAP and POP3...

LG Flare LX165 (Virgin Mobile)

The LG Flare is a decent choice for taking advantage of Virgin Mobile's payLo plans, and at under $20 up front, it's a steal.

Good voice quality. Lightweight. Brightly lit numeric keypad.

Terrible battery life. No camera or music player. Bluetooth pairing is needlessly complicated. Proprietary AC adapter.

Plans, Apps, and Conclusions Virgin Mobile's payLo plans for the LG Flare are quite inexpensive. A 1500-minute, one-month plan that includes 500 text messages and a paltry 10MB of Web access costs $30. You can also get a 400-minute plan for $20, or pay...
