Samsung Galaxy A5 review

Mid-range phone gets a She's All That makeover, and it mostly works.

Good battery life ; Potent OLED screen ; High-quality build

Fairly pedestrian CPU tech ; No camera OIS ; A little pricey for the hardware

The new Samsung Galaxy A5 looks like a flagship, performs like a mid-ranger and is priced somewhere in-between. It's a great phone, but a middling camera and CPU ensure it doesn't fully rise above rivals.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) review

A mid-range phone in flagship clothing

Great build quality ; Punchy AMOLED screen ; Good battery life ; Decent cameras

Video could be a little sharper ; Some better-specced competition ; Audio is disappointing

Neatly balancing performance and price, the A5 has plenty to like - but there are strong rivals nipping at its heels

Samsung Galaxy A5 review (2017): Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy S8

Following the Note 7 debacle, Samsung saved their skins with the keenly-priced Galaxy A5

Flagship-like quality on a budget ; Lengthy battery life ; Versatile camera

Middling performance

Still, I think Samsung has just about done enough to put the Galaxy A5 (2017) in the mix here, and takes a well-deserved place as one of the best mid-range handsets we've reviewed. Even if it doesn’t quite edge out the OnePlus 3T, its lengthy battery...

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) review

Most of the bits you love from Samsung's Galaxy range, but for half the price. What's not to like?

Flagship features like water resistance, AMOLED screen ; Decent performance and battery life ; Killer design

Outdated Android ; Beaten on specs by cheaper rivals ; Camera only works well in good light

Takes most of the features we loved in the Galaxy S7, but distills them down into a much more affordable handset. Specs might lag behind the OnePluses of the world, but design is on point.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Review: In Depth

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) review: The Samsung Galaxy A5 has already proven its worth in previous years, with last year's model landing a full five-star...

Premium design ; Smooth performance ; Well designed UX ; Strong display

Out-performed by similarly priced phones ; Fingerprint magnet ; No 4K video recording

It’s not a perfect mid-range phone, but it consistently hits all the key notes you’d want a device in its class to, and it does so very well. It also does an excellent job of distilling down some of the main draws of the Galaxy S7 flagship, so if...

Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 review: A Galaxy S7 lookalike with a much lower price

Samsung has updated its mid-range Galaxy A5 phone for 2017, but is this stripped-down Galaxy S7 lookalike worth your money? Find out in our Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 review.

The Galaxy A5 2017 is a fantastic mid-range phone, with the looks of a flagship and some decent performance and all-round specs. Our only real concern is that Samsung is pricing itself out the market, with just a small difference in price separating...

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) review

  (Rating Hidden)

The Galaxy A5 (2017) is one of Samsung's mid-priced smartphones, but does its performance mean you'll end up regretting not spending just a little more? There are some great affordable smartphones, but we've also encountered many that will leave you...

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Review: A STUNNING Android Phone

It's understandable that most of the hype and excitement throughout the year is focused on flagship smartphones - these are, after all, the handsets which bring us all the cutting-edge new features, like massive high-res displays, fancy dual-cameras,...

High-end metal and glass build materials and design, capable processor, well-optimised hardware and software, waterproof, decent camera, great display, superb battery life, affordable

A little lacking in top-end performance grunt

A really fantastic phone for the price, with excellent design and build, and has some of the best battery life on the market

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) review: A well-built phone that lives or dies by Samsung Pay

The Samsung Galaxy A5 falls in the budget flagship segment and comes with a nice assortment of features that help it stand apart.

I'm in two minds about the Samsung Galaxy A5. On the one hand, Samsung Pay and IP68 certification are really nice. On the other hand, the OnePlus 3T offers dramatically more performance for the same price.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) vs Samsung Galaxy S7

Samsung's Galaxy S7 is one of the most popular Android phones. In part, that's because of its very good performance and excellent camera. Another key factor is the stunning glass and metal design.

We take away two things about the S7 and the new A5 after using both for a while: these are two very good phones, but they are also different in more ways than is apparent by just looking at the two from aside.
