Sony Ericsson W950i review

A triumph of style over substance

Good music features

No camera ; Awful keypad

The W950i seems to have been designed with music-playing features in mind, and precious little else

Sony Ericsson W950i

Sony Ericsson has taken a bold decision with its W950i model by omitting a feature many would regard as being compulsory.

Taking over the role of the flagship Walkman phone is the Sony Ericsson W950i. With this particular model Sony Ericsson has taken the decision which may come as somewhat of a surprise. Unlike all the other mobile phones I've look at, whether from...

Comparison of music smartphones Nokia N91 and Sony Ericsson W950i

Last year's spring saw release of a unique article over at Mobile-Review.com " comparison of the latest and greatest music phones. That editorial prompted a flurry, and our readers were eagerly waiting for the next installment, which was to be...

Apparently, in terms of box contents it is a draw, since for either of the devices the sales package is rich, even though there are some differences: the cradle the N91 comes boxed with and the W950i does not, but in return it shows off a carrying...

A phone for music fans

With a gorgeous touchscreen and 4GB onboard memory, the slim Sony Ericsson W950i definitely has the cool factor. But is this 3G smartphone as hot as it looks

Impressive storage space, brilliant screen, superb sound quality.

No EDGE support, no camera, no WiFi, expensive.

If you want a phone that can subsitute an iPod, the W950i is definitely it.

Ewan closes out his Sony Ericsson W950i review and finishes on a positive note...

Previous review parts - Introduction and Music - UIQ 3 interface - The Applications Looking back on my review of the W950i leaves me with an interesting thought. If the W950i had been a bad phone, there wouldn't have been as much to write about. The...

Sony Ericsson W950i (part 3 - The Applications)

Continuing the in-depth review of the Sony Ericsson W950, Ewan takes a look at the internal application suite.

PIM The big four management apps are the PIM applications - your Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Tasks/to-do's. What is important to a user here is two-fold. The first is the ability to find the information he needs on his phone as fast as possible; the...

Sony Ericsson W950i (part 2 - the UIQ 3 Interface)

Ewan continues his in-depth look at Sony Ericsson's UIQ 3-powered music smartphone...

The Interface Lets talk about the user interface. The W950i uses UIQ3, running Symbian OS, a similar set up to the P990 and M600i. Interfaces are in the news a lot at the moment, and it would be fair to point out that UI design is a thankless job -...

Sony Ericsson W950i (part 1)

Ewan takes a look at the W950's music capabilities from a power-music-user viewpoint.

Introduction And now it's time for UIQ to play with the big boys. Because, while the P800 might have been their first effort, which was improved on through the rest of the P series right up to the P990, while the M600 had the slim form factor and...

Sony Ericsson W950i

Measuring 106…54…15 mm, the smartphone can claim the title of a œslim handset, in the manner of the latest tendencies. Many complain about the phone being too wide, but it's not quite right. As a matter of fact, it's wider than all other handsets,...

Sony Ericsson W950i

A cross between a smart phone and a 3G phone, Sony Ericsson's W950i offers a massive 4GB of flash memory for music storage, but it is ultimately let d...

4GB flash memory, Excellent music performance, Touch screen and stylus operation, Compact size for smart phone

No Wi-Fi, 3G but no video call, No memory expansion, Keypad hard to press, Sluggish interface at times

An excellent music phone thanks to the Walkman application and a massive 4GB of storage space, but no camera or Wi-Fi and a poor keypad detract from the package.
