Sony Xperia sola review

Sony's Xperia Sola is a mid-range Android phone that follows the same design principles as the company's more expensive Xperia S. A compact frame, reasonable build quality and NFC capabilities are nice features, but the Xperia Sola is a little overpriced.

The Sony Xperia Sola has a compact design, good build quality and NFC capabilities, but it's a little overpriced and the floating touch feature is currently little more than a gimmick.

Sony Xperia sola

For those whose budgets don't stretch quite far enough to be able to afford the Xperia S, Sony presents its mid-range Xperia sola.

NFC SmartTags are useful; great display; and snappy performance from CPU.

Floating touch just a gimmick at the moment; no wow factor from the overall design; and only 720p video recording.

Sony Xperia Sola Android phone

Sony Xperia Sola review: A solid, but not outstanding mid-range Android phone that's a little overpriced

Compact design and good build ; NFC SmartTags ; Reasonably intuitive software

Poor ergonomics ; Screen makes typing a chore ; Terrible camera button

The Sony Xperia Sola has a compact design, good build quality and NFC capabilities, but it's a little overpriced and the floating touch feature is currently little more than a gimmick.

Sony Xperia sola review: Light 'em up

Sony are busy extending their Xperia line, after the Japanese behemoth bought out their Ericsson counterpart, and the Xperia sola lies squarely in the middle of the pack. The flagship Xperia S has set the ceiling and the Xperia P will set the...

Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support ; 3.7" 16M-color capacitive touchscreen of Full WVGA resolution (854 x 480 pixels) with Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine; Floating touch display ; Android OS v2.3.7 Gingerbread, planned Android 4.0 ICS update ; Dual-core 1 GHz...

No front-facing camera ; No Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of box ; Display has poor viewing angles ; Stiff and unresponsive shutter key ; Non user-replaceable battery

The Sony Xperia sola is a routine exercise in midrange smartphone making but Sony won't do without those if they're to quickly get where they want to be. This isn't about HD screens, quad-core CPUs and umpteen megapixel cameras - the Xperia sola goes...

Sony Xperia Sola Review

Sony has gone all out with their new Xperia line-up. The company recently announced a slew of handsets - the Xperia S, the U, the Go, the Acro S, the Miro, the Tipo, the P, and the Xperia Sola. In terms of design these phones boast of much better...

We put the Xperia Sola through a range of synthetic benchmarks against the Huawei Honor, the Xperia U and the One V and as you can see from the results above, it's an average performer.

Sony Xperia Sola

The Sola is a solid smartphone with a good array of features, beyond the basics. Just be sure you can't buy the better Xperia S for the same price, before you commit.

Great UI and performance ; NFC ; Decent camera

Limited internal storage ; Colour banding on LCD display ; 3.7-inch screen may be too small for some

We feel it's recommended price of AU$486 is reasonable for a phone with these specs and features, though we have noticed that a recent price drop makes the superior Xperia S about the same price through some major vendors. Allphones, for example,...

Sony Xperia sola Review

What we are reviewing today is the Sony Xperia sola, which comes with a 3.7-inch LCD display, 5-megapixel camera, NFC, “floating touch” technology (more on that later), and most importantly, a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz: a specs sheet that has...

Smooth performance ; Pretty interface ; Dual-core processor

Photo quality is average ; Front-facing cam would have been nice ; Gingerbread at launch

After putting it through its paces, we can conclude that the Sony Xperia sola is a well-made Android smartphone. If you are looking for a decent mid-range offering that gets you a good amount of bang for the buck, do not hesitate to check it out! We...

Sony Xperia Sola - Magical Touch

The Sony Xperia Sola is the first phone in the world to feature a unique floating touch navigation for an easy web browsing experience. Does this feature have any practical application or is it just a marketing gimmick? Hit the link to find out more.

Solid build quality ; Good handling ; Unique Floating Touch technology

Poor battery life ; Stiff camera shutter button ; Runs on Android 2.3

Based on the recent portfolio of Sony Xperia phones introduced, it is apparent that the company isn't looking at competing directly with the heavyweights (Apple, HTC and Samsung) head-to-head. Instead, Sony is differentiating its products with unique...
