Sony Xperia E5 review

Not quite a budget bargain, and certainly no mid-range marvel

Attractive design ; Nice display ; Decent camera

Slow performance ; No fast charging ; Odd volume rocker placement

Awkwardly straddling the budget and mid-range categories, the Sony Xperia E5 doesn't quite do enough to earn a recommendation in either. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but you can get better smartphones for around the same price.

Sony Xperia E5 review: More expensive and outclassed by its rivals

The Xperia E5 is fast and well-made, but it's marred by poor battery life and a sub-par camera

It's a shame the Xperia E5 isn't quite the full package, as its smaller dimensions would have made it a great alternative to the big-screened Moto G4 . Sadly, terrible battery life and an underwhelming camera leave little reason to recommend it, and...

Sony Xperia E5 Review: In Depth

Sony Xperia E5 Review: Sony's cheapest Xperia phone of 2016 costs just £99, has a 13-megapixel camera & 5-inch HD screen. Here's our full Xperia E5 review

Decent battery life ; Respectable budget performance ; Rugged

Very basic cameras

Sony’s Xperia E5 is one of the cheapest Xperia phones you can nab these days, but holds up remarkably well compared with rivals like the Wileyfox Spark. Attractive and solid design work, respectable performance and battery life, and a decent HD screen...

Sony Xperia E5

Despite serving up a number of solid specs, the Xperia E5 arrives on the scene when a number of great mid-range devices are already on the market. Ultimately, Sony's option is not a clear standout.

Solidly constructed body; Good display and camera; Strong battery life

No standout features; Not competitively priced; A tad under specced

As has become Sony's usual modus operandi with its mid-range Xperia devices, the E5 is as solid and capable as they come. At R3 999, it's similarly priced to comparable devices like the Huawei GR3 and AG Mobile #Hashtag, and with the mid-range market...

Sony Xperia E5 Smartphone Review

Solid entry into the smartphone world. In our test, Sony's Xperia E5 entry model presents itself as a solid smartphone in the lower price range. You can find out in our review whether a purchase is worthwhile in light of the strong competition.

bright IPS panel ; exact GPS module ; performance (considering the SoC) ; NFC ; design and workmanship ; fast SD-card slot

slow SoC ; high heat development in parts ; speaker ; battery life (compared to the competition) ; camera

In our test, the Sony entry model scores with a high-contrast IPS HD panel and handiness. The Xperia E5 is well-built but only offers a plastic case that appears thin, although it feels okay. The competition that is made from glass (UHANS S1) or metal...

Sony Xperia E5 Review

The Xperia E5 seems stronger than ever, with significantly better hardware compared to its predecessor in essentially every area: design, display, power-crunching, and even imaging. On paper, it's a worthy successor...

Signature design ; Good display ; No-nonsense software ; Good performance ; Very decent camera overall

Volume rocker's placement isn't optimal ; Earpiece produces muffled voices ; Camera sometimes messes up white balance

It's not often we get to say this, but it's probably best that, for the time being, you stay put and steer clear of the Xperia E5. That's not because it's a problematic device—the very opposite in fact! As a whole, we were pleasantly surprised by...

Sony Xperia E5 review

The Sony Xperia E5 is a decent mid-range smartphone, with an attractive slimline design. Priced in the competitive mid-range, it's not lacking in any way, but neither does it particularly stand out. We reckon it's a safe choice that won't let you down,...

We've decided to call the Sony E5 a safe choice. It's not an exciting choice; it's not revolutionary or pushing at any boundaries. Nope, but it's very safe. Asked by dave from uk on 19th Aug 2016 We used the standard setting straight out of the box.

Great phone but signal not good in places

Great phone. But I am using the same chip as I did in my bbm. Signal is not working in areas it would with the bbm. But still works most of the time. Great design. Easy to work. Would have given it five stars of signal worked as bbm
