August Smart Lock (3rd gen) review

In our August Smart Lock Third Generation review we discover a lock that's sleek, secure and simple to use.

Lower price and more compact, stylish design ; Simple installation experience ; DoorSense knows when your door is left ajar ; Wide range of third-party device integrations

Wi-Fi bridge required for remote access and third-party integrations ; Noisy internal operation when the lock is activated

With new features, greatly improved styling, and a lower price point for this entry-level model, the August Smart Lock is fantastic addition to any home. You’ll need to spend an additional $79 on the August Connect Wi-Fi bridge to maximize smart lock...

August's affordable Smart Lock is solid, even sans Siri

Don't be fooled by the price; the $149 August Smart Lock is pretty darn clever.

August's third-generation Smart Lock comes with a DoorSense open/close sensor and works with Amazon Alexa speakers and the Google Home for just $149.

The Smart Lock doesn't work with Apple HomeKit or Z-Wave. Its lock motor is a little noisy.

August's Smart Lock is a decent entry-level smart lock that performs well and offers a lot for its price.

August Smart Lock Review: Best Budget Smart Lock

The August Smart Lock is a great pick for the budget-minded smart home owner. It's cheaper than the Smart Lock Pro (even after you include the optional August Connect bridge), with the only missing features being Z-Wave and Homekit support. If you...

Easy to install ; Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Z-Wave, Nest, IFTTT and more ; Flexible settings ; Auto-Lock and Auto-Unlock features

Price does not include August Connect module ; No Apple Homekit or Amazon Key support

August's Smart Lock is the best budget lock, but you'll need to spend extra to connect it to Wi-Fi.

August Smart Lock 3rd Gen Review

August Smart Lock is a better value than any other smart lock we tested.

The three-month battery life might be too short for some homeowners.

Despite being a very affordable smart lock, August Smart Lock 3rd Generation has exceptional features and amazing smart home compatibility.

August Smart Lock Review

The August Smart Lock is easy to install because it doesn't replace the entire existing deadbolt, but it also doesn't add extra security features, unless you purchase the tapered deadbolt separately. As with other smart locks, you'll need to purchase...

Unlimited virtual keys ; Works with Nest and HomeKit ; Inconspicuous — exterior doesn't change ; Everlock/Auto-Unlock (Apple only)

Bluetooth only ; Delayed unlocking ; No built-in alarm ; Doesn't work with many smart-home hubs

One of the few locks that works with both Nest devices and Apple's HomeKit, the unassuming August is expandable through a collection of compatible accessories.
