Samsung Galaxy Tab review

The first major Android tablet release arrives to challenge the iPad

Nice size ; Solid build ; Android 2.2 ; Excellent connectivity

Laggy performance ; Weak battery ; Poor camera ; Lack of optimisations

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first major tablet release since the Apple iPad launched about five months ago.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Review

The iPad now has big competition. Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet computer is hitting the marketplace with a big bang.

More portable than previous competitors ; Great screen

Identity issues

The Galaxy Tab is really the first viable competitor to Apple's iPad that offers many advantages of its own, even if in a still foggy market

Samsung Galaxy Tab review

We review the Galaxy Tab – Samsung's eagerly awaited Android-based rival to the iPad

Lightweight; broad video file format playback; generally comfortable keyboard; battery life

Sluggish interface; incomplete or frustrating-to-use software features; no USB or HDMI ports

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is a lot like Christmas. After all the anticipation, in reality it’s a bit of a let down. Although the Tab is a sturdy, slender, lightweight and attractive tablet, it could be easier to hold. The Tab’s small size, which makes it...

Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi review

Editors' note: Due to the changing competitive landscape, we've lowered the Tab's overall score to 6. Check out CNET Tablet page for our latest tablet reviews.

The Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi Android tablet offers a bright, responsive 7-inch screen, GPS, Bluetooth, and full access to Google's suite of mobile apps, including Android Market.

This Galaxy Tab is an Android 2.2 tablet living in an Android 3.0 world, and bigger and better tablets are priced in the same ballpark.

Samsung's 3G-free version of its 7-inch tablet, the Galaxy Tab, offers an appealing mix of price and horsepower, but it's overshadowed by the wave of inexpensive Android 3.0 devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab review

Editors' note: Due to the changing competitive landscape, we've lowered the Tab's overall score to 7. Check out CNET Tablet page for our latest tablet reviews.

Samsung's 7-inch Android tablet is a serious contender to the Apple iPad, boasting two cameras, Flash compatibility, and a more convenient size.

The Tab behaves more like a supersize Android phone than a Netbook alternative. The Android OS and its apps aren't yet optimized for the larger screen. Depending on your plan, you may be in for a two-year contract and a commitment to monthly charges.

The Galaxy Tab is a beautiful product with features that will make iPad owners envious, but its in-between size and possible carrier commitments hold it back from broad appeal.

Samsung Galaxy Tab (Verizon Wireless)

The Verizon Wireless version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet adds a custom app store that just isn't yet ready for prime time.

Great plan pricing for medium-to-heavy users. Custom app store has potential to showcase tablet-centric apps.

Right now, Verizon's custom app store is a dis-app-ster. No discounted two-year contract option. Less storage than T-Mobile's model.

Then there's the software. That's where Verizon really tries, and where Verizon fails, at least for now.

Samsung Galaxy Tab (T-Mobile)

T-Mobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab offers more custom software than Sprint's, but still not quite enough.

More storage and faster Internet than the Sprint version.

Service plans aren't optimal. Still not enough apps.

Service Plan and Conclusions T-Mobile's Galaxy Tab costs the same as the Sprint and Verizon versions, $399 with a two-year contract or $599 without. That makes it cheaper than AT&T's $629, 16GB 3G-enabled iPad. And I like Sprint's and Verizon's Tab...

Samsung Galaxy Tab (Sprint)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first truly viable Android-based competitor to the Apple iPad.

Fast. Well built with a slick design. Runs almost all Android apps. Supports Adobe Flash 10.1.

Not enough tablet-centric software. Reflective screen. Slick back.
