Canon ZR500 First Impressions Camcorder Review

At CES, Canon announced the release of three new ZR MiniDV camcorders. The budget-line series has received significant overhaul in the areas of zoom, reductions in size and weight, a 2.7" widescreen LCD, and some design changes - most notably a new...

Canon ZR500 1/6" 680K CCD 2.7" 112K LCD 25X Optical Zoom MiniDV Camcorder

You simply can't beat its price-to-performance ratio. Who cares if it doesn't take digital stills? It does exactly what any other single-chip DV camera would do for a bargain price.

Very inexpensive. Good image quality, covers all the essentials of a DV camcorder, from recording to digital transfer. 16:9 is an added bonus, but I wouldn't count on it for widescreen footage that will hold up on an HDTV

It's worth noting that this camera does not have the ability to convert analog sources into DV output (as many other cameras can), but given its extremely low price, I'd still give it five stars. The joystick menu system is also a little less...

Love it for the most part

Very simple and straightforward to use, excellent picture quality, GREAT price, digital transfer via firewire no problem, battery life excellent so far. Really quite nice for the cash, despite the older media

Integral microphone picks up some noise from the tape motor; would probably be cured by using an external microphone. Also some issues with aspect (image stretched longitudinally on computer and TV), despite switching from widescreen 16:9 to regular...

Great little camcoder!

I am so impressed with this camcorder. I just got back form a trip out west and took this little guy along because it got good reviews and I wanted to take video of the trip. On the trip I took about 4 hours of video in 16:9. I was really afraid of...

Great camcorder for price

Wished it came bundled with firewire cable, but guess it would be more expensive then.

Comes with quite a lot of manual settings for a cheap camcorder. Video quality is pretty good under normal conditions. Easy to use. Great starter camcorder

No threads for lens filters

Above average for the money!

While this camcorder is since considered "outdated" it still has tons more features then a lot of todays budget camcorders. The video quality is so-so and if you don't mind messing with DV tapes, you have a really good camcorder!

Good feature set, good low light video, durable, viewfinder

Outdated", Video quality is so-so, DV Tape format, not as long battery life

Canon Zr500 - Why it Stands Out

The canon zr500 is a mini DV camcorder with 25x optical zoom. It is highly desirable bit of kit and would make a perfect gift for anyone looking for a camcorder. It has true widescreen recording and the 25x optical zoom on the canon zr500 is extremely...

Product Specifications

The MV500 and MV500i digital camcorders offer users enhanced PC connectivity and improved performance in a compact and stylish design. With their increased lens magnification, enhanced specifications and affordable price, these MV models offer outstanding cost performance. By offering varying levels of functionality and price, the MV500/MV500i provide consumers with an opportunity to select the camcorder that is most suited to their needs. This range offers the consumer an optimal combination of functionality and cost performance. Measuring just 58 x 99 x 144, these additions to the MV line-up are extremely compact and well designed. The CCD size in the MV500/MV500i has been reduced from 1/4" to 1/6", thus allowing Canon to dramatically increase the lens magnification while maintaining the compact size of the preceding MV400 Series models. With the incorporation of a high-performance Canon lens, both models provide a significant improvement in magnification capabilities. The MV500i and MV500 utilize an optical 18x/digital 360x, which are both replacing the 10x optical zoom lens of the preceding MV400 Series. These high-performance Canon zoom lenses transform distant subjects into dramatic close-ups. With the use of the analog-digital converter, users can convert analog video and audio signals, on VHS or 8 mm tape, into digital signals for real-time output from the DV terminal (IEEE 1394 interface). By selecting the shooting mode that best suits the scene, each MV500 series model adjusts internal controls to create the perfect video each time. Mode choices are Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Sand and Snow, and Low Light as well as the Night Mode with which color shots are possible even in dim conditions. The "i" version model, MV500i, provides users with digital line-in functionality. With this feature, users can upload edited footage or graphics from their computer, or other digital devices, to the camcorder. This feature also provides the possibility to incorporate analog video data into new digital recordings.
