SimplyDV Review: JVC Everio GZ-MG77 HDD camcorder

It provides sturdy, robust handling. Clip management and accessibility to controls is good. Widescreen, DIS, G-sensor and 7 hours record capacity in HQ mode are major plus points.

Some users will miss a viewfinder, and picture quality slides slightly in darker corners and also with fast(ish) movement on camera.

Given the market, and accepting the technological limitations inherent in MPEG-2 / HDD recording and playback, we have to give a cautious "recommended" verdict for casual home users!

JVC Everio GZ-MG77

The GZ-MG77 is one of JVC's mid range hard disk based camcorders and with a 30GB hard drive, 2.2 megapixel CCD and true 16:9 video, this machine is no...

Compact frame, easy to use, solid construction, storage space

Compression artefacts evident on rapid pans, ghosting, poor quality still images

The GZ-MG77 is an above average camcorder, but it's let down on occasion by poor video quality.

Image quality

JVC Everio GZ-MG77

Supersmall and light; stores as much as 37 hours of video; easy and fast video transfer to your computer.

Subpar video quality; aspect-ratio issues with third-party programs when shooting wide-screen; no video light; no provisions for external microphone or accessories.

The small size and massive video storage capacity of the JVC Everio GZ-MG77 make it a tantalizing choice, but poor video quality keeps this hard-disk-based camera from being a tape- or DVD-killer.

The JVC Everio GZ-MG77's stills are decent, suitable for small snapshot prints if you don't need to crop or zoom. Colour came out well, but our indoor shots were blurry, and the flash's red-eye reduction was completely ineffective.

JVC GZ-MG77 Camcorder Review

The GZ-MG77 (MSRP ($900) was JVC's top model in their Everio line of hard disk drive camcorders until the GZ-MG505 was finally released, after much delay, a few weeks ago. Since last year's GZ-MG70, the major changes have occurred in the imager (which...

JVC Everio GZ-MG77 HDD Camcorder Review

The JVC Everio GZ-MG77 Hard Disk Drive (HDD) camcorder is a good light easy to use camcorder for people who don't want to use a lot of features, but would like the flexibility of a HDD camcorder.

JVC GZ-MG77

The JVC Everio GZ-MG77 features a 1/3.9" CCD (2.18 gross MP), which is considerably larger than the 1/6" 680K CCD in the GZ-MG37. This upgrade should increase all around performance: from bright light video to low light video to still performance. Even...

JVC GZ-MG77

Easy to use. DVD creating software good and easy to use. Picture quality on video good. Picture quality on stills average as the focus is centralised and the edges are out of focus. Nice and compact with good battery life (but really need a larger...

The slider for wide angle and telephoto is awkward and difficult to get a slow transition.

JVC GZ-MG77

Flexible - easy to put photos on memory card and video on disc. Quick and easy to use - responsive. No messing changing discs or tapes - stacks of space on the 30Gb - we did hours and hours in Spain this summer - could have used much higher quality...

Does take photos, can take good photos - but if you want lots of good photos you need a camera rather than one of these. Also - need to watch the software you get to edit video - the format is not compatible with all. No viewer eyepiece - all is 'on...
