Asus VivoPC X review

Unbearable load times hold back this VR-ready gaming PC

Lightweight and portable ; Supports VR headsets ; Affordable

Slow hard drive ; No front USB ports ; Loud fans

The Asus VivoPC X gets you into VR without breaking the bank, but you may need to spend extra for a smoother experience.

This VR-ready desktop is smaller than an Xbox

The Asus VivoPC X isn't just paying lip service to VR -- this $799 (roughly £650, AU$1,100) machine has two HDMI ports to make headset hookups easy.

Asus VivoPC X Review and Ratings

The VivoPC X provides a lot of gaming power for the price, and runs today's titles well at 1080p, but its slow hard drive and lack of upgradability are frustrating.

Excellent performance for 1080p and VR gaming ; Lots of built-in ports, including two HDMI connectors ; Attractive but understated design ; Compact form factor ; Very reasonably priced for the specs

Slow hard drive ; Can’t fill the M.2 SSD slot without voiding the warranty ; Huge power brick ; No USB ports on the front ; Fans can get loud when gaming ; Keyboard and mouse are basic non-gaming units

It’s easy to look at benchmark numbers and not be blown away by the VivoPC X. But keep in mind that, while you can buy PCs that double the performance of this compact PC, most of them clock in at double or more its $799 price. Sure, the Falcon...

Asus VivoPC X Review: Gorgeous Looks, Limited Performance

Taken on its own, the VivoPC X is quite the compelling package. It has one of the most attractive compact designs of any PC I've tested, and delivers solid VR-ready power for $799.

Wonderfully compact design ; Affordable ; VR-ready

Performance trails that of some competitors ; Limited configurations ; Can't upgrade components

The Asus VivoPC X offers solid, VR-ready performance within a stunningly small design, but this PC is held back by its lack of upgradability.
