HP Compaq Business Desktop d530

Though not quite as impressive as the managed PC platforms sold by Dell and IBM, HP's mainstream solution is more than capable of satisfying the average IT department.

Though HP's management software offering is overshadowed by the ones from Dell and IBM, we're impressed with its seamless integration with Altiris tools, as well as with HP's wide range of image-compatible systems, like the small-form-factor d530. HP's...

The HP d530's trump card is its compact yet largely practical design. However, its limited upgrading and expansion options may result in higher costs over the long term.

With the same type of easily removable tool-less housing as the ThinkCentre S50 this HP machine can be stripped and rebuilt very quickly, which will appeal to the corporate IT techs and SMEs wishing to avoid lengthy hardware failure downtime.

NVIDIA GeForce2 MX Meets Quake 3

Update: August 24, 2000 - I've included results using the Detonator 3 drivers to this guide. A significant increase in performance occurred at resolutions of 800x600 and 1024x768. Especially exciting are the results at 1024x768 using high quality...

Two options that weren't factored in are geometry detail and texture filtering. The good thing is that trilinear filtering is enabled by default when high quality settings are used and serves as a source for additional tweaking. While it's very...

NVIDIA GeForce2 MX Mixed Mode Rendering

What do you end up with when you take a leading edge 3D game like Quake 3 and get to play around with it on a new low-cost graphics card based on NVIDIA's GeForce2 MX? Lot's of fun for sure - especially if you're into hard-core tweaking! After having...

For the most part, many of the graphic settings than can be maintained from the Quake 3 menus are adequate for an initial cut at tweaking. On the options menu, settings such as marks on walls and dynamic lights can be disabled. Color depth and texture...

If you want a basic computer for light use, then buy this. It is not recommended for gaming. The graphics are very outdated and will not run any modern games.

It's a good computer for getting on Facebook, checking email, and things like that

The CPU fan sounds like a jet taking off

HP Compaq D530

If you add a discrete video card, recommend you go with the newer versions to get Direct X 11.0 with your AGP card. Still fairly cheap, too. If X 11 isn't important, go with 2600 or above in ATI Radeon or 9400,9500,9600 in nVidia cards.

Delighted with this refurb - very clean - this is my second refurb from Joy Systems and they do good to exceptional work, obviously depending on the tech that does the work. Many brand new replacement parts in this one, not in the first one. Comes with...

Came with 512 MB's of DDR, not DDR2 as advertised. Not a problem as I would have added ram anyway, plus a little better power supply (about 400W, depending on the addin vid card). Still a great deal on a good old machine with a friendly OS
