Canon PowerShot G5 X

The Canon PowerShot G5 X is the second of the company's new 1-inch sensor compact cameras, and is the higher-end sibling to the Canon PowerShot G9 X.

Canon PowerShot G5 X review: Chunky but comprehensive compact

It's all change in the camera market, with the focus on throwaway compacts all but dead in the face of smartphone domination. Canon is well known for its chunky-but-capable compact cameras, with 2013's G16 seemingly representing the end of that range,...

Capable autofocus in various lighting conditions, built-in viewfinder and vari-angle screen, fast maximum aperture throughout zoom range, notable upgrade over G16

Fairly chunky build will raise questions for some, still in the shadow of the Sony RX100 III/IV due to size, high ISO can't overcome image noise

On the cusp of 2016 there's an argument that chunky compact cameras have had their day. The Canon G5 X helps to counter that argument with a decent lens and capable 1-inch sensor, yet it doesn't offer a huge amount extra over and above the pocketable...

Canon Powershot G5 X review

A zoom with a view(finder)

Compact and well-built ; Good all-round performance ; Useful OLED viewfinder

No 4K video ; Viewfinder not as good as Sony/Panasonic

The compact size and viewfinder make this the most appealing Canon G series camera on the market

Canon PowerShot G5 X review

Canon's latest high-end compact comes with an electronic viewfinder and extensive external controls to boost its appeal for enthusiasts.

Lots of dials and buttons ; Large sensor ; Touch sensitive screen ; Inbuilt Wi-Fi

Lack of control over Creative Shot filters ; Fairly short zoom range

It's good to see viewfinders returning to compact cameras – it makes composing images in bright light much easier. The G5 X is an excellent compact camera for anyone looking for a first 'serious' camera or a back-up to an SLR or CSC, but it's not one...

Canon PowerShot G5 X review

With the same 1-inch 20-megapixel sensor and 24-100mm f1.8-2.8 lens as the G7 X , the Canon PowerShot G5 X targets basically the same enthusiast photographers, but with a photo-nerdier design that includes a very nice high-resolution built-in OLED...

The Canon PowerShot G5 X has a great viewfinder and a comfortable shooting design for serious photographers.

It can be frustratingly slow, with a short battery life.

Sluggish performance and a more limited feature set than similarly priced competitors hold the Canon PowerShot G5 back from being a leading contender among its peers.

Canon G5 X review - An SLR in your pocket?

Some performance issues, but the Canon G5 X has outstanding image quality and ergonomics for such a small camera.

With truly exceptional image quality from such a small camera, anything less than five stars may seem unduly harsh. The G5 X’s performance should be better, though, and it’s important to remember that – unlike the Canon G7 X and Sony RX100 IV – the G5...

Canon PowerShot G5 X

The G5 X is a 20.2MP camera with a 1-inch High Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 processor that can deliver nearly 6 fps still images and Full HD video. The integral 24-100mm lens (equivalent) has a maximum aperture of f/1.8 that drops to only f/2.8...

Canon PowerShot G5 X review

  (Rating Hidden)

The Canon PowerShot G5X looks like the ultimate halfway house between a compact camera and a DSLR. On the one hand, it's relatively small and light with a versatile built-in lens, making it a handy, take-anywhere camera. On the other, it has a large...

Canon Powershot G5 X Review

The Canon Powershot G5 X is Canon's latest advanced compact camera, and features a large 1inch sensor, built in electronic viewfinder, and a tilting vari-angle touch screen. Find out how it performs in our full review.

4.2x optical zoom lens ; 20mp 1inch sensor ; Good noise performance ; Tilting vari-angle touch-screen ; Great image quality and colour ; Excellent EVF quality ; Solid build quality and handling ; Wi-Fi and NFC ; USB charging ; Rapid focus

Lacks panoramic shooting mode ; Short battery life - unless using ECO mode ; High speed shooting much slower with raw

The Canon Powershot G5 X offers a larger than normal sensor, with a 20 megapixel 1inch BSI CMOS sensor that is known to give good image quality and low levels of noise. Combined with a 4.2x optical zoom lens with image stabilisation, the G5 X gives...
