Ricoh proves that it can match the big boys for specification and image quality.

Ricoh Caplio R5 digital camera

My first impressions of the R5 are of a svelte, compact digital compact, its all-metal body is both sturdy and nice to hold thanks to a subtle curve (accentuated by the body styling) on the right side of the body. I wanted to heartily recommend this...

Anti shake, great macro capability, all-metal build, good ergonomics and styling

AF problems, image noise issues, camera crashes, lens zoom control fiddly

I wanted to heartily recommend this camera to you but on balance, I can’t. The Ricoh Caplio R5 straddles the gap between full control and automation nicely, its feature set and build quality almost perfect for the market it’s aimed at – and as the...

Aims to get you closer and show you the bigger picture

Sharp picture throughout lens range

Too much image noise

Certainly ticks lots of boxes, but image noise is a headache

You can't beat the convenience of a slimline compact camera. Slip it into a spare pocket and take it just about anywhere. However, with that portability comes an almost universal frustration...

Ricoh Caplio R5

Ricoh's digital compacts typically offer a combination of something a little different from the competition - a wide-angle lens here, high ISO sensitivity there, macro down to 1cm - plus very keen pricing

Operation is commendably zippy, When there's plenty of light, sharp natural images are achievable, Lightweight enough for one-handed operation

Rather plasticky

Packed with features, the Ricoh produces good work if handled with care

Ricoh Caplio R5

If you're in the market for a sub-£250 7 megapixel camera, the Ricoh Caplio R5 is a good place to start.

7-megapixel resolution allows for poster-sized prints, biggest zoom range on test, keenly priced, vibration correction

Slightly cheap and plastic feel to the body, noisy lens mechanism, small fiddly controls

The noisy lens operation is a little off-putting, as is the plastic feel to the body, but some may consider that its price and features go some way to making amends.

Ricoh - Caplio R5

Although not a very common name in the digital camera market, Ricoh does have a history of making cameras and currently has quite a wide range of consumer products in this category. The Caplio R5 is ...

Small, well specified and generally well constructed, this is a neat little camera. Let down slightly by some fringing in images and a slightly clunky zoom, it's still a competitive product.

Ricoh Caplio R5 7.2Mp compact digital camera

Unlike some of the digital camera brands gracing shop shelves, Ricoh can claim a long and surprisingly prestigious photographic heritage, including development of the world's first mass-produced twin-lens reflex, the RicohFlex III, which launched back...

The long zoom, 7.24 megapixel CCD, stunning macro, compact size and image stabilization all help the R5 to justify £250 asking price, but as a package there's just not enough it excels at to make it easy to recommend without reservations. Good but not...

Ricoh Caplio R5

Announced on the 24th of August 06, the Ricoh Caplio R5 is a new 7 megapixel update to the Ricoh Caplio R4 - it has a 7.1x optical zoom lens - this is impressive considering that the camera is roughly the same size as other cameras with only a 3x...

Very compact and stylish with a solid metal body (will easily fit in pockets) ; Built in Vibration Reduction image stabilisation helps acheive blur free low-light / zoom photos ; 2.5" screen, with 230,000 pixels ; 7.1x optical zoom lens ; Very fast...

The Ricoh Caplio R5 has improved on the Ricoh Caplio R4 in a number of ways, most noticable is the camera's improved image quality, improved shot to shot time, and improved battery life. Noise levels are slightly better than the R4 with less noise at...

Ricoh Caplio R5

The Caplio R5 attempts to be jack-of-all-trades on a tight budget and, to be fair, it's the latter that hampers the camera. A slightly plastic, boxy build with a weird curve to the body does it no favours, although good results are achievable with a...
