Sony Alpha A230

It's one of the cheapest entry-level DSLRs on the market, but is the Sony Alpha A230 good value for money?

Sony Alpha A230 DSLR camera

Since it launched its initial Alpha A100 in 2006, Sony has slowly but steadily increased the breadth of its DSLR range, inserting models here and there until there is barely any difference between neighbouring Alpha units - the aim of course being...

Good, sharp results using 18-55mm standard zoom, user friendly, realistic colours, small form factor, large-ish LCD

Plastic feel, blocky design, no Live View, grip too small to hold as comfortably or tightly as we'd have liked

Though it may be the current runt of the Alpha family, the A230 doesn't prove a pig to use, in spite of our grumbles about the too small grip and lack of Live View. With large, well spaced controls - big buttons and chunky mode and command dials - it...

Sony A230 review

As the lightest-ever Sony digital SLR camera at 450g, the A230 is also a little light on features at first glance.

The Sony A230 digital SLR camera may be a fairly unsophisticated model, but that’s not a bad thing given its target market. It’s a good starter option for those on a budget who aren’t already wedded to Canon or Nikon’s lens systems – neither of which...

Sony DSLR-A230

The Sony DSLR-A230 looks almost identical to the more expensive DSLR-A330, the only real difference between these two cameras are a few new additions that Sony have added to the DSLR-A330. But considering the extra cost of the A330 the DSLR-A230 is...

Sony a230

A new DSLR that replaces the previous model from a brand generally sees a number of changes, and placing the latest a230 alongside the a200 will certainly reveal that Sony has reworked the design to be quite significantly different. But a look at the...

There are positives and negatives about this budget Sony. We can’t help but think that it lacks Live View and even the tilted screen found on the a380, but at around £400 with lens it is good value. Image quality is very good for the price, and even...

Sony A230

User friendly ; Good value ; Eye sensor focusing ; Image-stabilised body, HDMI-out port

Plasticky feel ; Uncomfortable handgrip ; Blocky design and control layout

Sony Alpha DSLR-A230

If you don't need advanced features, Sony's bargain-priced Alpha DSLR-A230 delivers the basics—along with great pictures—for $550 with lens.

Competitive price. Lightweight. Good image quality. Noise is unnoticeable up to and including ISO 1600. Clever interface guides beginners. HDMI port with support for HDMI CEC.

LCD does not support Live View. Kit lens produces soft images at wider apertures. Still image frame rate is a bit sluggish when compared with comparable cameras.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 review

A modest update over its predecessor, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 , the Alpha DSLR-A230 offers the same essential feature set in a redesigned body with sufficient quality and performance-enhancing firmware tweaks to merit the term "upgrade." And like its...

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 has fast autofocus; high magnification viewfinder for its class; dual card slots; relatively simple, straightforward operation; built-in wireless flash and image stabilization; helpful SteadyShot indicator.

Smallish grip; default settings produce suboptimal photos.

The Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 is a solid entry-level dSLR that will surely have its fans, and it's a better deal than its slightly higher-end sibling, the A330.
