Pantech Jest (Verizon Wireless)

The Pantech Jest is one of the worst phones we've tested recently on Verizon; only its compact design and usable QWERTY keyboard save it from oblivion.

Compact and sturdy. Solid battery life. Social Beat app aggregates social networks, RSS feeds, and Gmail.

Terrible touchpad. Poor camera. Clumsy music transfers. Buggy stereo Bluetooth. Non-standard headphone jack.

The Pantech Jest has a compact pocket-friendly design with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It has a shortcut taskbar, a great display, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a music player, stereo Bluetooth, and social-networking features. It's free with a contract.

The Pantech Jest's optical directional pad is not that responsive and can be annoying to use, and there's no other way to navigate the phone.

The Pantech Jest is a decent messaging phone for the young social-networking enthusiast, but the optical pad might be a nuisance.
