Sony Xperia L1

Sony's bewildering range of Xperia smartphone designations continues with the Sony Xperia L1. You can think of it as a successor to the Xperia E family, but more relevant to the average shopper is the kind of company it keeps within its price range.

Sony Xperia L1 review

A big screen on a big budget, but that's pretty much all you get

5.5in screen feels plenty big enough for a sub-£200 phone ; 5.5in screen feels plenty big enough for a sub-£200 phone ; Xperia UI doesn’t get in your way

Only average performance and battery life ; Camera quality is merely ok ; As a whole package, it can’t match the competition

Sony’s signature style works in its favour, and the big screen is great at this price, but the Xperia L doesn’t do much else to take the win over similarly-priced rivals

A big screen budget blower that falls short elsewhere

Large display ; Nice design ; Expandable storage

Weak hardware ; Poor camera ; No fingerprint scanner

The Xperia L1 gives you Sony styling on a budget and that screen is nice and big, but a weak chipset, average camera and lack of a fingerprint scanner hold it back from true greatness, even at this low price.

Sony Xperia L1 Review: Budget Moto G5 rival phone

Our Sony Xperia L1 review takes a close look at one of Sony's most affordable phones of 2017. Is the Xperia L1 a good choice for budget conscious shoppers?

Attractive screen ; Expandable storage ; User friendly OS

Limited performance ; No fingerprint sensor

The Xperia L1 is your typical budget blower, offering some slick Sony styling for the £150 asking price. In some areas it lags behind rivals such as the Moto G5, especially when it comes to performance, while the camera tech isn’t quite as strong...

fancy case design ; NFC, USB OTG, USB C ; extensive and mostly up-to-date software ; fast Wi-Fi ; precise GPS ; good handling ; rather bright display with good color accuracy ; good battery runtimes for everyday use

pressure-sensitive case ; rough surface needs getting used to ; a lot of bloatware ; average microphone quality ; camera often produces mediocre images ; display has high black value ; comparatively low performance ; high maximum temperature ; high...

The Sony Xperia L1 is a lower mid-range smartphone that offers a sound performance in most areas. If you expect no more from your smartphone than to work and occasionally shoot a photo, you will be very happy with this device. Even though some might...
