Best Inkjet Photo Printer: Epson Stylus Photo R800

The Epson Stylus Photo R800 stands out on its own because it is the first and only printer that combines long-lasting pigment ink with high gloss paper printing. It was also the first printer to incorporate two new ink colours (Red and Blue), giving it...

Epson - Stylus Photo R800

This eight-colour inkjet photo printer is a direct competitor for Canon's seven-colour i990. Where Canon adds light cyan, light magenta and red to the standard CMYK quartet, Epson goes for an extra black, a red, a ...

This is a very competent photo printer. The extra inks are used to increase the colour gamut so it more closely resembles that of silver halide photography. The tiny drop size, now down to 1.5pl, gives a very fine grain to prints. More versatile than...

Epson STYLUS PHOTO R800

Using separate ink cartridges for each colour, the Epson STYLUS PHOTO R800 adds red and blue inks to the standard set of cyan, magenta and yellow inks...

Prints RGB very well

CMYK prints are distorted, prints text slowly

If you plan on printing a lot of snapshots, you'll appreciate the R800's roll feeder; and as long as you stick with RGB files, the R800 will reward you with great-looking photo prints.

Epson Stylus Photo R800 Printer

The Stylus Photo R800 adds red and blue inks to the standard set of cyan, magenta, and yellow inks; but it omits light photo cyan and light photo magenta. Other cartridges supply photo black, matte black (for text), and a gloss overcoat. The matte...

Prints on rolls of photo paper

Slow print speeds

The R800 can print on rolls of photo paper either 4 inches or 8.3 inches wide. The printer has a button that pushes finished photos out to be cut off, and then retracts the excess paper to avoid waste. You don't have to remove paper from the main tray...

Service and support

Epson Stylus Photo R800

Excellent print quality; relatively fast photo printing; flexible printer driver; no need to swap Matte Black and Photo Black cartridges.

Doesn't handle changes in output resolution gracefully; no PictBridge support.

This excellent printer cedes its Editors' Choice crown to the Canon iP8500 but remains a great choice for photo enthusiasts despite some finicky printhead behavior.

Epson Stylus Photo R800

The Epson Stylus Photo R800 can function as your single, all-purpose printer. It offers a large color gamut and true photo quality, and is designed for easy printing on CDs and DVDs.

Photos are true photo quality; separate cartridge for each color; Epson's easiest approach yet for printing on printable CDs and DVDs.

No memory card slots, even for transferring files to your PC; does not do direct printing at all; relatively slow for standard printing.
