Unfortunately, it's the remaining 50 percent that causes problems. Higher frequencies start to get a bit harsh as you crank the volume up, and the bass can sound quite out of balance at times. Blondie's ‘Heart of Glass' was almost overwhelmed by the...

If you’re going to spend over £400 on a set of AirPlay speakers then the sound needs to justify the cash. However, the inAir 5000 lacks the finesse you’d expect in this price range and struggles to compete with rivals such as the B&W Zeppelin Air.

Altec Lansing InAir 5000

The stylish ; streams immersive, consistent sound from iOS devices and iTunes over Apple's wireless AirPlay signal.

If you aren't terribly picky about sound quality, for half the cash you can get a Bluetooth speaker with nearly the same aural reach.

The Altec Lansing InAir 5000 produces well-balanced sound in an attractive package that will blow the roof off your room...if you can afford it.

Mostly good sound is marred by connectivity problems, making an otherwise solid product a disappointment.

Room rockin’ volume and bass. Great mid-range performance. Digital signal processing quashes distortion. Fast and nimble wireless music streaming. AUX port offers non-iOS versatility in a pinch

Good sound at a not-so-good price. Randomly dropped connections are instant party-killers. Aggressive signal processing at high volumes. No battery = stationary tunes. No iOS cable included

Extremely powerful speaker system. Delivers deep bass without distortion. Simple, app-driven set up.

AirPlay drops signal. Uses signal processessing at top volumes to prevent bass distortion—not for audiophiles.
