With excellent video quality, a long list of video, still and time-lapse options and a built-in touchscreen, the Hero4 Silver is the GoPro we'd pick to shoot with.
The GoPro Hero4 Silver produces some great video for an action cam. Its abundant resolution and frame-rate options will satisfy beginners and experienced shooters. The built-in touchscreen makes previewing and reviewing and changing settings a breeze.
It still needs a housing to be waterproof. Battery redesign means you can't use your old batteries and battery life will still be too short for some. No option for in-camera digital image stabilization.
The GoPro Hero4 Silver takes everything we liked about the Hero3+ Black -- especially the solid video quality -- and adds in some handy new features including a touchscreen, making it one of the best little action cameras around.

The first ever GoPro camera to feature a built-in touchscreen display, the GoPro Hero 4 Silver Edition is a tiny, lightweight camera that can still shoot 4K UltraHD video. It shoots great video in daylight and has a versatile set of features too, but...

As simple or sophisticated as you want it to be, GoPro's Hero4 Silver will impress pros and hobbyists alike with outstanding video and photo quality that far exceeds its humble “action cam” label.
Great video and photo quality ; Simple yet sophisticated ; Vivid touchscreen ; Highly stable Wi-Fi
Limited battery life ; Some issues with pixelation ; Can’t handle bright, direct light
GoPro deserves credit for breathing life back into the stagnant camcorder business. While traditional camcorders have lost their luster, action cameras have gained popularity. Competitors from Sony to Polaroid have challenged GoPro for this turf, but...

Underneath the surface, the GoPro's Hero4 Silver is basically the Hero3+ Black Edition—and that's a good thing. Its top-notch performance and new touch-screen display justify this action cam's $400 price tag.

We'll update this piece with our latest test results in the new year, but we think the GoPro Hero5 Black is the best action camera currently available.

The Hero4 Silver is a very capable action camera well worth the price for the quality, usability and availability of great accessories. It also stands out among all the action cameras we've tested for its large, bright LCD touch screen — which makes it...
Sharp images with fine color detail ; Bright 1.7-inch touchscreen LCD ; Easy control over Wi-Fi and mobile app ; Access to huge selection of mounts and cases
Video and photos can look a tad hazy ; Case muffles audio
The Hero4 Silver achieves the best balance of quality, price and usability among action cameras, while supporting oodles of accessories.

Early last month GoPro completed their annual October ritual of releasing a suite of new units. Like past years, GoPro doesn't tend to make massive upgrades in their units, but rather works to add incremental features and performance bumps. Like...

For as long as there have been cameras, people have been pointing them at themselves doing stupid things. The best new way to do that is with the GoPro Hero 4 Silver.
Great image quality ; Enormous array of mounts ; Excellent all-rounder
Expensive ; Average battery life ; Non-standard charger
There’s no two ways about it: the GoPro range is pricier than ever. The Hero 4 Silver is $498 from Australia’s GoPro distributor.
