Is it a camcorder, camera or both? It certainly looks the part but is the Xacti VPC-HD1000 a jack of all trades or a master of none?
As with Sony's consumer HD camcorders, the Sanyo relies on a CMOS sensor rather than a CCD one. Despite the HD1000's diminutive proportions, the CMOS sensor used is a hefty 1/2.5in model, with a 4-megapixel resolution. This is actually larger and with...

How can a camcorder that looks like a toy, and which saves video to SD cards, produce such stunningly good high-definition pictures?
Excellent picture quality ; Impressive handling ; Good connectivity
Software update needed
Sanyo needs to update the software very quickly if users are to be able to shoot, edit and share their SD card clips. However, they’re onto a clear winner with the HD1000 – pictures are superb, handling is good and full marks for the range of...

Sanyo's Xacti range has just got serious, with 1080i 'full HD' from a pocket-sized camcorder. This we gotta see...
Great video, tons of features, easy to use... if only there was a PAL-friendly version

A new digital video camera from Sanyo designed to take full advantage of your HD-Ready TV.
If you want a camera that will handle the high resolutions that your snazzy HD-Ready TV can manage, without expecting the world of its operator, this is a great option. It isn't as expensive as some high-end non-HD cameras, though it doesn't have all...

The HD1000, boasts both four-megapixel stills and high-def video
For a camcorder enthusiast looking for a cheap model, this may be of interest, but to anyone looking for the best of both worlds, this is far from it.

It's a 3CCD camcorder that offers a choice of recording onto either internal HDD (Hard Disk Drive) or high-capacity SD cards in addition to USB 2.0 for importing clips into your computer. It's not an HD camcorder, but potentially ideal for camcorder...
Manipulating the controls with the right thumb and forefinger whilst recording is clunky and impedes stability when recording, which calls into question the research referred to above, but itâ-'s a neat device, especially when used in conjunction with...

Sleek and eye-catching design, user-friendly interface, above average stills capabilities
Outperformed by other HD units on the market
Despite the presence of superior alternatives on the market, the HD1000 remains an impressive and affordable HD option. As a sweet bonus, it also happens to be one of the coolest looking gadgets you'll ever own.

Today Sanyo announced the Xacti HD1000 with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. This is probably the smallest and the lightest full HD digital camcorder out there. The camcorder can write to SDHC memory to a 8GB memory card

A good price coupled with outstanding image quality - a good budget alternative to the Panasonic HDC-HS9
Despite its size, it's just as comfortable to hold and use as the HD700. The buttons may be more plentiful, but they still all fall conveniently under the thumb, so it's simple to use the camcorder with one hand
