HP's latest personal workstation series, the xw6400, is aimed at mid-range business users and, housed in a new mini-tower case, it's ideal where desk space is at a premium yet a system with plenty of grunt ...
This is an ideal system if you are looking to upgrade from an entry level workstation, while its small format makes it ideal for the smaller office, although on the flip side it does mean that your options are limited if you want to expand the hardware.

Our review unit of HP's first workstation to offer quad-core chips is modestly specced and priced - and it's a lot smaller that other systems we've seen.
Small, quiet case. Good set of entry-level accessories.
Slow processor. Few drive bays.
Our review unit has just a single processor, which you could upgrade with another chip in the future. It's the Intel Xeon E5310, which is the slowest of the quad-core range and runs at 1.6GHz. The specs are completed by 4GB of RAM, an nVidia 1500...

If you've read about the new quad-core workstations, you've probably wondered if they could substantially speed up your work. I wondered about that, too. So I jumped at the chance to review the latest HP xw8400 Workstation equipped with two 2.66 GHz...

Highly recommended desktop system is a bit pricey, but offers extremely quiet operation and remarkable AutoCAD performance
Although the higher price tag would ordinarily preclude the xw8400 from receiving Cadalyst's Highly Recommended rating, the stellar AutoCAD performance proved to be the determining factor here, so the HP xw8400 earns the Highly Recommended rating.

Remember the Xeon? It was Intel's leading-edge processor for PC-based workstations in the late 1990s. Then it was eclipsed by AMD's Opteron processor. Now the Xeon is back in the headlines with a vengeance.

i was put off by the one egg review because the writer didnt get the drift of this kind of PRO machine. i had to adjust too from the more consumer machines. when new this machine was thousands, it built like a tank and can be upgraded with newer...
THIS IS A PRO MACHINE, NOT DEPT STORE PLASTIC.. MADE FOR BIG WORK.. 800W POWERSUPPLY SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING. I OWN 2... AND CONFIGURE THEM AS I NEED FOR VIDEO EDITOR AND DAILY MACHINE
POST IS A BIT SLOW AND VERY THOROUGH, to allow configuring if needed. it assumes nothing on boot [tho i think there is a fast boot option in bios]. if youre complaining about the boot screen and slow, you dont know enough about this kind or workhorse

DON'T BUY THIS MODEL ITS A MISH MASH OF JUNK OUT DATED PARTS SLAPPED TOGETHER WITH A BOOT UP PROGRAM YOU WON'T LIKE.
It turns on and boots up
Computer case is big enough to bury an Ox inside. Boot up screen is set to some corporate boot up that is slooooowww. Did I mention the hard drive is always working on something. Clicking and working. The supposed empty bay came with a 3-1/2" hard...

Not sure if it supports SLI video configuration, so get one good video card to make up for it since SLI is overated anyway.
I have mine configured with 2 5150's (2.66ghz) and a Geforce 8800GTS and this machine is an ultimate gamer or anything rig. Runs onboard RAID. Total of 6 fans and this machine is still whisper quiet. XP Pro sees the 4 CPU's
Only 4 Sata ports and not much room for drive expansion. A little on the expensive side but getting a great quality built machine
