HP's Photosmart R717 carries 6.3 megapixels of shooting power, some neat features, and a great price. Find out more when Cliff Smith gives it a whirl.

This is very small unit and it would easily fit in a pocket or purse. It looks smart with it's brushed silver front, most importantly it takes decent images.

The HP Photosmart R717 is a compact 6MP digital camera with a 3x Optical zoom lens (8.0 - 24.0mm equivelant to 39mm - 117mm on a 35mm camera), and a 1.8" Colour TFT screen. The R717 is an update to the 5 megapixel, 1.5" screen R707 which I reviewed...
Good image quality - good colour ; HP Adaptive lighting can be very good ; Built in red-eye reduction (although it doesn't work for people who wear glasses) ; Good movie mode ; Good Built in help system / image advice etc ; Stylish compact camera
The HP Photosmart R717 is average value for money - and compared to the Fuji FinePix F10, seems slow and slightly dated. It has a medium size 1.8" colour screen, and records videos with sound. The camera is quite compact and very easy to use. Image...

A continuation of HP's R series the R717, like its predecessors, stands up to the slurs made against HP cameras. This dinky pocket-sized camera is perfect for a beginner with its fast, clear menus and photo hints. It also includes enough program...

It was last summer that HP first unleashed a streamlined new look for its digital cameras with the 5MP R707.

With its rubberized black body and brushed-metal face plate, the 6.2-megapixel HP Photosmart R717 bears a marked family resemblance to its 5.1-megapixel predecessor, the R707. However, it upgrades many of its older sibling's features.
In-camera image advice Very sharp images
Battery life is about average
The R717 ships with no media for its SD Card slot, but the 32MB of internal memory suffices for taking a few high-res test shots on your way to the electronics store to buy media. A USB cable is included in the box for connection to a PC or to a...

This compact camera has some strong qualities that novices will appreciate.
Excellent on-screen help. Clear menu structure. Competitive price.
Picture quality could be better. Small LCD. Sluggish boot-up time and shutter lag.

Well-conceived design; easy-to-master controls and menus; solid panorama and macro modes.
Subpar performance in nearly every area; weak flash; somewhat noisy images.
A decent all-around snapshot camera with a few notable features for newbies.
