Hands-on: An interchangeable lens camera that's waterproof to 15m? Impressive
Overall, the Nikon 1 AW1 looks like a very promising camera. We normally roll my eyes when a company claims a 'world first' but for once it's something actually worth shouting about. The only caveat at this point, or at least one of two, is whether the...

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first waterproof interchangeable lens camera
Sharply detailed results ; Rugged weighty feel ; Built to last
Lack of viewfinder ; Occasional misting ; No hot shoe

Waterproof wonder
Waterproof and tough ; Reliable exposure metering ; Bright, high res monitor
Only two toughened lenses available ; Rear controls fiddly ; Essential settings hidden in menus
The AW1 performs well, produces acceptable shots in most conditions and has unparalleled go-anywhere abilities. It's certainly a fine choice for those who'll value it's toughness over the lack of manual controls and current lens-based compromises.

Not content with the norm, Nikon has only gone and announced the Nikon 1 AW1 - the world's first waterproof compact system camera. We would like to say

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first waterproof (down to 49 ft), shockproof (6.6 ft) and freeze-proof (14 degrees F) CSC interchangeable lens camera. Befitting its likely use by outdoor enthusiasts, the camera incorporates built-in GPS, an altimeter, a depth...

Ruggedized compact system cameras are few and far between, but the Nikon 1 AW1 fits the bill. It offers the same sensor and features as the Nikon 1 J3 in a waterproof, dustproof and shockproof body. It's a tough camera, though reasonably light and...

In the AW1, Nikon has delivered the most rugged system camera on the market. Despite being built like a tank and able to survive demanding drops and harsh environments, it is not entirely faultless. The lack of manual controls makes it incredibly slow...

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first interchangeable lens camera that you can take deep underwater, but it's best left in automatic mode.
Nikon has billed the 1 series as a fast shooting system since its launch. The AW1 lives up to that claim; it starts and shoots in about 1.4 seconds and records a minimal 0.05-second shutter lag in bright light. In very dim light the focus slows a bit,...

First ever fully waterproofed compact system camera may just be Nikon's best
Sharply focused results, rugged qualities have ensured a built-to-last construction
Occasional problems with inner glass of lens misting up, lacks hotshoe, no tilting screen and no eye level viewfinder
Despite minor misgivings as above, we reckon this is Nikon’s most fully realised compact system camera of the past three years. It's a rugged model that, unusually, takes really good photographs, and with consistency. Perhaps that’s something worth...
