Can Nikon's latest swivel camera match the success of its predecessor?

A compact camera with a twist
Swivel lens system ; 10x optical zoom ; 6-megapixel sensor ; Vibration reduction technology ; Face Priority mode
Manual controls ; Bulky dimensions ; LCD viewfinder
It's not as 'compact' as some, but features and performance more than make up for it

The S10's stand out feature is its curvaceous waveform bodywork that looks extremely nice and is actually rather nice to hold as well. But the first impression I had out of the box, was, well, cheap! It's an all-plastic model and it lacks the...
Looks good, image quality, VR, screen, pricing
Noise in shadows at lower sensitivities, some elements of the build, no manual control, lens cap gets in the way
Previous, award winning swivel lens/body design CoolPix cameras came at time when the digital camera market was (perhaps) not yet as mature as today and now technology has moved on and despite the wavy body design, the S10 now looks a tad wearisome....

Photokina 2006 saw the arrival of a raft of new Nikons, and one of the most interesting is this, the Coolpix S10. Carrying the torch for the companies swivel body/lens cameras, the S10 features a neat and curvaceous body style that makes it very...
Curvy design, comes with plenty of features
Not everyone will like the curvy design, a tad pricey if Photokina price tag sticks

While all the other cameras we've tested recently follow the usual design convention of sticking the lens on the front of the camera, our review of the Nikon Coolpix…
With its unique, stylish design, the Nikon Coolpix S10 certainly stands out from the crowd. More importantly, it's a capable camera, even though its megapixel rating looks a little paltry. You get a vast optical zoom and antishake technology, too.

Good image quality.10X stabilized zoom.Excellent light metering.Excellent colour rendition.High definition 2.5-inch LCD monitor.Easy to use.Body design allows for excellent flexibility in framing shots.Very compact.
Relatively sensitive to noise past 100 ISO.Compression a bit too strong at the highest image quality.Wide angle barrel distortion when the subject is close by.

The propaganda The CoolPix S10 is Nikon's top end swivel design digital camera. Although the rotating lens might look a bit outlandish – probably more like a camcorder than a digital still camera – it incorporates a 10x optical…

An expensive oddity from Nikon
There’s a lot that's good here, such as the VR and Portrait functions, but the casing is bulky and the price is a tad too high

Small controls
I was very pleased with the Nikon Coolpix S10. Picture quality was impressive and the camera is easy to use compared to other super zoom digital cameras. It is also smaller and more compact than other similar models. Recommended.
