Finding a decent entry level DSLR is always challenging, with the sheer number of cameras on offer making it difficult for new buyers to tell which is worthiest of their attention.
Excellent updated handling ; Solid performance, great images ; Fast AF
No GPS ; Conservative upgrades

It's not a huge upgrade from the D5300, but at last we have a Nikon DSLR with a touchscreen
Touch sensitive screen ; Built in Wi-Fi ; High resolution sensor with no anti-aliasing filter
Expensive compared to D5300 ; Slow focusing in Live View
The D5500 offers beginners a lot of creative control, the touch-screen display is a useful addition and the sensor captures high levels of detail. It's a pleasing camera, but it's no game-changer.

It's a curious time in the world of cameras right now, with boundaries ever-blurring, but new technologies incremental rather than revolutionary. The arrival

A great DSLR that's built for beginners
Detailed images ; Monocoque design ; Articulated touchscreen
Relatively cramped viewfinder
A tempting, beginner-friendly DSLR.

Ever since I reviewed it in 2013, I've been recommending the Nikon D5300 as my top choice for a general-purpose dSLR suitable for kids-family-and-travel photography. The D5500 is a modest update over the D5300, with some design tweaks and a touchscreen...
The Nikon D5500 delivers excellent photo quality as well as a performance that can keep up with your kids and pets.
The redesigned grip may not be comfortable for people with large hands, and Nikon really needs to update its Wi-Fi app.
Lightweight and compact with everything the family photographer needs, the Nikon D5500 maintains its position as a great general-purpose dSLR.

An entry level DSLR is one that offers easy access to all the benefits of DSLR photography to first-time users. The D5500 is a lightweight and compact DX format DSLR (APS-C) that contains a 24.2MP CMOS sensor and can deliver up to 5 frames per second...

The Nikon D5500 is a mid-range digital SLR, taking over from the D5300, which narrowly missed out on a Best Buy last year. Like the D5300 it has a 24Mp sensor and a flip-out vari-angle screen, and with touchscreen controls and wi-fi features it comes...

The colours from the camera are certainly very punchy and with the right lens, the D5500 can be very sharp as well.

Nikon finally put a touchscreen on its D5500 DSLR camera, but it forgot to upgrade everything else.
Swiveling touchscreen ; Great image quality ; Longer battery life ; Built-in Wi-Fi
Slow tap-to-shoot ; GPS got axed ; No water resistance or weather sealing ; Average video recording
The inclusion of a touchscreen in the Nikon D5500 is nice, but the camera remains mostly the same as the D5300 first released in 2013.
