With a 15x lens and tilting monitor, the H9 talks the talk, but can it walk the walk?

Maximise your photography skills with the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H9, which boasts a remarkable 15x optical zoom lens, 8.1 effective megapixels, and a host of technology innovations.
Optional accessories for the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H9, include a durable black leather jacket case (LCJ-HD) and additional Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries (NP-BG1). The Wide and Tele conversion lenses (VCL-DH1774 and VCL-DH0774) allow you to cover an...

A 15x optical zoom and 3in tilting LCD screen debut in Sony's flagship Cyber-shot model

Sony gets you close to the action with its 15x zoom
The H9 has a great 15x zoom lens and high def image output, but the clumsy interface and high price are off putting.

The Sony DSC H9 has a fifteen times optical zoom lens. This is one of the largest zooms you will find on a consumer digital camera. I found the picture quality to be good and I was impressed at the way Sony managed to handle all the features to ensure...
Length of zoom - low shutter lag - ease of use - colours - lighting
Some purple fringing - noise in my lowlight test

A strong choice if you're after an ultra zoom camera, the Cyber-Shot DSC-H9 sports a 15x optical zoom and captures some good shots, however it does have issues with haloing and purple fringing, which will be irritating for many users.
15x zoom, Sharp pictures, Good noise response, Image stabilisation
Very poor haloing and purple fringing issues, Chunky and somewhat flimsy design

The DSC-H9 is mighty fast, blasting more than 18 JPEGs in 10 seconds, with no shutter delay for single shots – great for sports and...
LCD tilts up and down for extreme-angle shots. Face-recognition technology is smart enough to fire fill-flash in harsh sunlight. 15X optical zoom
Tiny viewfinder nearly useless. No RAW support. Shadow details can be grainy even in daylight. Noise ruins darker shots

Sony changed quite a few details, inside and out, between last year's H5 and its latest megazooms, the Cyber-shot DSC-H9 and DSC-H7. An f/2.7-4.5 31mm-465mm 15x supersedes the 12x zoom on last year's, and the resolution kicks up a notch from 7 to 8...
Relatively wide angle for a megazoom; tons of manual and automatic features; large, flip-up LCD; fast continuous shooting.
Small EVF; lens aberrations and vignetting; image noise and some processing artifacts; lacks hotshoe and raw file support.
If you shoot primarily outdoors in daytime--especially sports, children and animals--the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9 is a great choice. The cheaper DSC-H7 has a smaller LCD, lacks infrared shooting, and has a few interface differences, but is otherwise...
