Kiss led the way with networked DVD players but the DP558 ups the stakes with a 200GB disk drive, a TV Tuner and remote web access. But is it too heavily featured for its own good?
There is of course a wide range of recording formats available, ranging from best quality at 8Mbit to super long play at 1.5Mbit. Personally I wouldn’t use anything below 4Mbit (standard quality) as content recorded at any setting below this resulted...

KISS, having been bought out by Linksys owner Cisco, is starting to introduce more network friendly devices. It's latest offering - the DP-558 starts to blur the lines between PVR, DVD and media bridge, but can the network company simply buy its way...
Record to HDD, transfer to and from your network, and beyond
Even playing a DVD, it is very noisy
So far as the DVD drive goes, it played a DIVX of Tron, DVD-R and RW, read JPEGS from a CD-ROM and I haven't any audio content on disc this couldn't handle. I've reviewed STB, DVD and PVR units over the last year, but this is the first that comes close...

The literature provided by Kiss Technology about the DP-558 suggests that the reason it doesn't have the facilities to burn DVDs is that it has a hard drive. Fair enough; you can get about 120 hours of footage onto the 80GB version of the DP-558 (there...
We can't quite fathom not having a DVD recorder in the DP-558. It wouldn't add much to the price and would save time when archiving. This is a well put-together machine that does exactly what it says it will - so why leave out such a fundamental feature?

Wide range of supported formats and connectors, PC connectivity
No DVD burner
A wide range of supported formats, combined with stylish industrial design, makes the KiSS DP-558 a great hard disk recorder for the power user who doesn't mind recording in MPEG-2 and archiving footage regularly.

Supports XVid, DivX, MPEG. Streams media effortlessly. Free EPG. Online Weather. Pauses live TV. Easy setup.
Poorly constructed. Ugly unit. Stability issues. EPG doesn't integrate well with subscription TV.
The DP-558 is an extremely feature-rich DVD recorder with few file limitations. At the same time, it's also a somewhat unstable unit that could have done with better industrial design.

The main feature of the DP-558 is its internal HDD with a capacity of 80GB that allows recording up to 120hours of television programs, depending of course on the chosen recording quality. Recording can also be scheduled, if you know the time of the...
Looking at the playback capabilities, KISS claims that the DP-558 is DivX certified, however we had playback problems, especially with the 4, 6 and 8Mbit encoded DivX files. We are not so sure if the problem lies with the onboard chipset's abilities to...
