Impressive pictures are let down by lack of interactivity
Stunning colours ; 1080p 24 True Cinema mode ; Competitive price
Slow startup ; Incompatible with BD profile 1.1 ; Lacks support for DTS-HD
Capable of delivering excellent sound and pictures, but we'd suggest waiting for the next generation model to iron out the failings

How does the PS3 stand up to Sony's top-notch Blu-ray player?
HDMI output, component video output, S-video output, composite video output, wide pitch audio outputs, Optical and coaxial digital audio outputs, 5.1ch analogue audio output, analogue stereo output

The debut standalone Blu-ray disc player from the format's chief protagonist has hit the UK. And despite its slightly brutish appearance and tedious loading time, in terms of pictures the Sony BDP-S1E is a hands-down winner
Brilliant pictures, Impressive features, Good sound
Tediously slow loading time, Uninspired styling
Sony's debut Blu-ray deck is here. And what an incredible visual experience it delivers when you eventually set it up

Sony's decision to wait before releasing a dedicated Blu-ray player in Australia may have surprised some observers. After all, they developed the tech...
Excellent image quality with true high-definition 1080p Blu-ray playback, great DVD upscaling, beautiful design, quick and easy to use
Some features will require new displays to function, occasional bug with menus
This is the product to watch for Blu-ray enthusiasts. It's not cheap, but the exceptional quality of its features and functionality easily justify its price.

The Sony BDP-S1E is an intriguing device, which comes at a good price point, and appears to have the build, the looks and the features.

Used with: LG 55" 768p TV Arcam AVR300 KEF IQ5 Fronts Gallo Due Surround & Centre Speakers Logitech universal remote Well, it was a hell of an impulse purchase given that I _was_ going to wait for the format war to end. But first impressions, on...
To die for picture quality, absolutely superb sound, especially off decent discs, damn good DVD playback
Very poor buttons on fascia, the absolute age it takes to warm up - or load a disc - during which time buttons press but do nothing. Except when they queue up instructions!

Built to true "ES" standards and will probably outlive newer models because of this. The fact that this was Sony's first player will surely make it a collectable in the years to come. Extremely frustrating disc loading times!
Superb picture & sound
VERY VERY slow loading time
