Attractive features and killer HD pictures make Sony's step-up Blu-ray spinner an excellent purchase
Top-drawer picture quality, DLNA, 3D and BRAVIA Internet Video support, Easy to use
No built-in Wi-Fi, Slower disc loading than previous models, Web browsing

The BDP-S480 offers so much on-tap entertainment, you may never spin a disc
Rich, detailed picture quality ; SACD compatibility
Slower disc loading ; No downloadable apps

The first of Sony's 2011 Blu-ray offerings we've seen, the BDP-S480 has evolved from the already good BDP-S470 to create a fine Blu-ray machine
Extensive spec ; above-average DVD upscaling and splendid high-def images
Rather bland sound ; can be caught out from time to time in 3D
The Sony’s just where you’d expect it to be: jostling for top honours

Sony's BDP-S570 player was a runaway hit during 2010, hoovering up more awards than the clean-up crew at the BAFTAs – so this closely related follow-up has a lot to live up to.
Rich, detailed picture quality; SACD compatibility
Slower disc loading; no downloadable apps

3D Blu-ray Player
Excellent Scaling and Deinterlacing ; Robust Networking ; Good File Support for Media Playback ; Extensive Video on Demand Options ; Speedy Load Times
Detrimental Image Manipulation ; Lack of Picture Controls in Menus ; XMB Sometimes Sluggish

Sony BDP-S480 review: Sony's cheapest 3D Blu-ray player, with Internet video streaming built-in
Plenty of Blu-ray and streaming video features ; iOS/Android controller app is good ; Low price
Main menu system is slightly slow ; Web browsing is poor
The Sony BDP-S480 has almost everything you could want in a Blu-ray player. It's reasonably quick to operate and incorporates plenty of video on demand services. Extra features in the form of 3D playback and an iOS/Android controller app justify its...

The BDP-S480 isn't a high-priced Blu-ray player, but it's a decent quality one.
iOS and Android apps to control ; Range of IPTV options ; 3D Blu-ray compatible ; Media streaming options ; Qriocity support
Sluggish response on Xross Media Bar ; Web browser is woeful ; Not region-free
If you're after an entry-level player with a decent feature set, and don't require the apps and whistles of the mid- to high-end players, then this is a solid buy.

The Sony BDP-S480, one of four blu-ray players in Sony's 2011 line, is a step up from the entry level BDP-S380 by offering 3D playback in full HD.
While the Sony BDP-S480 might not win any design awards, it is nevertheless still a consummate looking blu-ray player. For a mid-priced blu-ray player, the BDP-S480 delivers top notch video quality in 3D and 2D. Disc load times are blazingly fast and...
