Sony Reader PRS-T1

Sony's first UK Wi-Fi Reader looks slicker than Amazon's Kindle. But is it better?

Multi-touch touchscreen, Thin and very light, Great E-ink Pearl screen

Reader Store still not open, No LRF support, Glossy front annoys

Sony Reader Wi-Fi (PRS-T1)

Sony finally comes down to earth with the Reader Wi-Fi, a $150 ebook reader that compares well with the B&N Nook Touch and upcoming Amazon Kindle Touch.

Slim design. Excellent contrast. Includes a memory card slot, a headphone jack, and ePub support. Attractive font choices.

Clunky Reader Store is difficult to use. No Reader Store-compatible iPhone or iPad apps. A few bugs.

A Few Quirks, Other Features, and Conclusions I also ran into a few actual bugs. Logging into the Reader Store using my Sony account the first time proved difficult, and required several tries where it threw me back a screen or two. When it finally...

Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1 (2011) review: Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1 (2011)

Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1 (2011)

The ; is a compact and lightweight touch-screen e-book reader. It offers access to large catalog of e-books, magazines, and newspapers via Sony's online store, plus online loaners from your local library, has support for EPUB files, and is compatible...

At $149, the PRS-T1 costs $50 more than the $99 Kindle Touch and it doesn't offer some of the little extras, like 3G wireless, e-book lending, and social-media integration, that competing e-readers offer. The Sony bookstore isn't as extensive as...

While there's no compelling reason to buy it over the Kindle Touch, the Sony Reader Wi-Fi is a very solid e-reader.

Sony Reader WiFi Touch (PRS-T1)

Much lighter Wi-Fi connectivity PDF reflow and annotations A massive price drop from the previous e-reader Infrared touchscreen Multiple dictionaries Solid battery life.

Can't delete books directly from the device Can't perform software updates over Wi-Fi No place to put the stylus when not in use Software more or less the same as the PRS-650 Some software bugs.

Although there have been a few changes and additions, the PRS-T1 is pretty much the same device as the PRS-650 — only much better value for money.

Sony Reader PRS-T1

Sony makes some of the best ebook readers, and they've earned several firsts: they made the first mainstream US E Ink ebook reader in 2006, and they were the first to employ IR touch technology that didn't interfere with display quality or drive up...

Great UI and touch experience, can download books using reader from public library, Google and Sony store, has stylus for note-taking, excellent PDF support

Costs a bit more than the competition

Sony PRS-T1

The Sony PRS T1BC offers the same core reading experience as the Sony PRS Touch Edition: excellent reading screen, convenient navigation via the ultra-responsive touchscreen, support for multiple book formats, month-long battery life, and multiple page...

An open platform, the Sony PRS T1BC lets you download books from the Sony eBook store and a host of other eBookstores including Kobo. Hard drive can be surmounted with microSD card for added storage as well as USB from drop-and-dragging files....

eBooks at the Sony Reader Store are more expensive than rival bookstores (Kindle, Nook, Kobo). Also, choices are fewer. The eReader doesn’t support taps for turning pages. To go up or back a page, you have to swipe the left or right corner of the page....

Based on specs alone, Sony has created an able rival for the Kindle in the Sony PRS T1BC. Perhaps what the company needs to do next, if it really wants to advance in the eReader game, is to improve its eBookstore and eReader services

Shape and design. Reading from it is fun

Initial setup is not easy for folks like me who wants up-and-running readers like Kindle which doesn't require any initial links to PCs for setups. Books purchased from other PCs are not downloaded automatically even if reader is connected to the...
