Just when you thought the Alienware 17 had pulled out all of the stops, the latest version, the R5 ($1,549 to start, $3,974 as tested), pushes everything a step further. Sure, its new black color scheme is handsome, but inside, a combination of an...
The Alienware 17 R5 looks great and has a lovely display and strong audio, and while it plays games well, it has weaker CPU performance than its competitors.

With this laptop, Alienware re-affirms its well-earned reputation for high-end gaming performance.
Excellent build quality ; High refresh rate display ; Variety of configuration options ; Exceptional gaming performance
Big and heavy ; Mediocre battery life
Taken as a whole, the Alienware 17 R5 delivers on everything it promises — exceptional gaming performance, unbelievable processing power, and a gorgeous display. It’s not without its flaws, but this is the laptop to beat if you need a gaming powerhouse...

The Alienware 17's Core i9 CPU and overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 let this gaming laptop pump out incredible desktop-class performance, but you pay for it in both cash and size.
Incredible desktop-class performance ; Overclockable CPU and GPU ; Gorgeous industrial design ; Decent battery life for a desktop replacement
Large and heavy ; Annoying hinge/vent design ; Can't get one without Tobii eye-tracking
The old Alienware 17 kicked ass. The new Alienware 17 R5 blows us away.

The Alienware 17 R5 gaming laptop delivers serious power in a big, but nicely built, package. The model we reviewed is expensive, but the configuration choices offer well-priced options for different budgets.

A little slimmer and lighter than some other 17-inch gaming laptops, but still not exactly portable.
Dell's ; is highly configurable, looks a bit more sophisticated than previous incarnations, and still delivers excellent performance.
You probably don't really want a programmable lightshow for your laptop. No dual-GPU options, and battery life isn't going to help much with on-the-go gaming.
It's not as much of a conversation piece as the tank-like Alienware 18, but the slimmer, lighter Alienware 17 is arguably more practical for serious gamers with realistic budgets.

The new Alienware 17 R5 delivers excellent gaming power in a sleeker, hinge-forward design with captivating sound and lighting effects.
Excellent gaming performance; Slimmer design; 13 customizable lighting zones ; Above-average battery life; Impressive audio quality
CPU performance trails competitors

Now with a hexa-core CPU. Despite using the most current components, the former top-gaming brand Alienware has had more and more difficulties standing up against the competitors. Find out in our review why this effort is not quite sufficient anymore...
robust and high-quality case ; many configuration options ; numerous illumination elements ; fast and responsive QHD display ; good input devices ; decent sound ; Thunderbolt 3 ; NVMe SSD ; G-Sync
CPU Turbo could be better ; limited viewing angles ; unnecessarily noisy in 3D operation ; few maintenance options ; very large and heavy ; meager battery life ; no card reader
Those looking for a stylish high-end notebook with good input devices, modern connections, and many illumination options should be pleased with the Alienware 17 R5. Aside from some smaller details, the 17-inch case is able to convince, as long as you...

Hear me roar
Peak performance ; Super-responsive trackpad
It ain't cheap ; Bit bulky
The Alienware 17 R5 oesn’t reinvent the wheel but it does live up the brand’s legacy in all the right ways.

Good for multimedia ; Gaming thrill ; Perfect for official purposes ; Good audio output ; Command center revamped
Mediocre ; Weighs nearly 10 pounds ; Performance Lower Than Competitors ; Tobii eye tracking ; Display is not hi rays as expected

The new Alienware 17 Laptop R5 is the latest gaming laptop from Dell. It has the latest Intel i7 (8th Gen Processor) with 16 GB RAM and Nvidia GTX 1070 8 GB GDDR5 GPU with a 1080p G-Sync enabled display with 60 Hz refresh rate. Is this the best gaming...
Gaming inspired design ; Vivid Display ; Latest Intel processor
Lower refresh rate No ; SD Card Slot
The New Alienware 17 Laptop R5 is a stellar gaming laptop. Additionally, the laptop can also handle CPU intensive tasks like video editing and render as well. But it does have a bit of shortcoming.
