Ten hours of battery life in a well-equipped, affordable 14-inch desktop replacement laptop. That's the Dell Inspiron 14R-5437 in a nutshell.

You won't mistake it for a $1,200-plus HP, Lenovo, or LG (or even Dell's more upscale Inspiron 7000 series), but the Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 is a sound convertible for about $900 in the peppy model we tested.

Here's a solid, utilitarian, all-purpose laptop that favors function over looks. It's not overly swift, but it runs for a whopping 9 hours on a single charge.
Super-long battery life ; Attractive industrial design ; Very good input ergonomics
Mediocre benchmark performance ; Heavy for a 14-inch notebook ; Resolution limited to 1366 by 768

Ten hours of battery life in a well-equipped, affordable 14-inch desktop replacement laptop. That's the Dell Inspiron 14R-5437 in a nutshell.
Nice Price. Almost 10 hours battery life. Removable battery. Optical drive. Good friction on screen hinges (no screen bounce)
Low 1,366 by 768 resolution screen. USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports are same color. Non-backlit keyboard
The Dell Inspiron 14R-5437 is a desktop replacement laptop that can go the distance. With a 6-cell removable battery pack and a power sipping fourth-generation Intel Core i3 processor, the Inspiron 14R-5437 has the power to run for almost ten hours....

The Dell Inspiron 14z-5423 ultrabook is built for speed. Unfortunately, it sacrifices battery life for raw multimedia and 3D power, which is costly in the long run.
Excellent 3D performance for an ultrabook. HDMI-out port. Third-generation Intel Core i5 processor. Discrete graphics. Full-size Ethernet port. Skullcandy-branded audio
Lags competitors in battery life. Not backlit keyboard. Relatively heavy. Some bloatware

Softened Ultrabook. The Dell Inspiron 14z is an ultrabook with a
Brushed aluminium surfaces; SIM card slot; Fast SSD; Quiet; Low power consumption; Long battery life
Poor workmanship of the hinges; Awkward maintenance; Touchpad jumps; Reflective display; Fixed battery
Dell hides the interfaces on the left with flaps, but leaves the ones on the right side open.

Ability to upgrade to SSD, Core i7, discrete graphics ; Great value for what's included
Battery life could get worrying with more powerful components ; Annoying flaps on some ports ; Design makes it seem like a toy
Just like the 13z, for the price involved, the 14z does well. The main sticking point is the battery life, which has been outgunned by competitors.
