It's bright green and white, runs Linux and could be the most important laptop you're never likely to use. The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) XO was designed expressly to put modern computing into the hands of children in developing countries.
While the last G1G1 scheme from late 2008 is no longer running, the OLPC XO can be donated to children in developing countries for $199 via laptop.org. Or it can now be bought for personal use through Amazon UK. If you're looking for a tough laptop for...

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO laptop may have been designed as a small cheap computer for children in developing countries, but it's become the antecedent of all netbooks - UPDATED 23 JANUARY 2009

OLPC now famously stands for One Laptop Per Child. And while anyone can purchase the device, rest assured the emphasis is firmly on child. The...
Insanely rugged. OLPC can operate in extreme temperatures and even while sitting in standing water. Battery withstands 2000 discharge cycles, and a five-watt solar panel can provide enough juice to run it. Loaded with kid-friendly apps, including...
Can often be baffling: OLPC president Walter Bender was working on a FAQ on how to open the lid when I spoke to him. Would be killer at the hoped-for 0 price point. No WPA Wi-Fi support. Keys are far too tiny for regular use. Touchpad is wildly touchy

It has taken more than two years, but the One Laptop per Child initiative has finally released its much-anticipated laptop: the OLPC XO-1. The XO-1 costs $200 each to donate, but for a limited timeuntil December 31, 2007people can avail themselves of...
Uses very little energy to run. Preloaded with educational software. Wireless, with mesh networking. Flash-compatible browser preinstalled. Long-cycle LiFePO4 battery. Rugged construction. Easy to service
Not compatible with store-bought Windows or Mac OS programs. Sluggish flash performance. Much less compelling for adults. Business model isn't consumer-oriented (shipping, customer support). You can't specify where your donated computer goes, unless...
The XO-1 laptop by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initiative is a game-changer for disadvantaged children in developing countries. For a limited time you can benefit as well.

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project is unique as the XO laptop it distributes. While the XO is not commercially available, our review provides an insight into what can be achieved in a laptop designed for children at a very low cost.

A gadget that gives back, the XO-1 is a laptop made for kids, and they're given out through the OLPC program.
OLPC, or the One Laptop Per Child program that was created by Nicholas Negroponte, is in full swing this year with their first model, the XO-1. This ambitious and altruistic gadget is a simple, practical wireless laptop that is fully loaded with new...
