The creator of the iPod starts a new revolution with this smart smoke alarm
Looks superb ; Easy to install ; Works flawlessly ; Polished browser & app UI ; Brings peace of mind
Costs 10-20x a dumb alarm
This means, for example, should the Protect detect gas it can tell the Nest thermostat to switch it off. This is where the Internet of Things and ecosystems within it become even more interesting.

Nest, known in the United States for its intelligent thermostat system that can be controlled via your iPhone, has launched an intelligent smoke and CO2 detector called Nest Protect. There is no doubting the Nest Protect is a very clever device that...
Monitor status via your phone, acts as a nightlight, battery lasts for 5 years, will connects to other Nest products, speaks to you, wave to turn off alarm
Expensive, need to have Wi-Fi for it to work, other Nest products absent from UK at time of writing
There is no doubting the Nest Protect is a very clever device that works as prescribed and achieves what it sets out to do. It looks good, can communicate with other Nest devices, and thanks to the app you can even detect a fire when not in the home....

$129 is a lot for a smoke detector, but it's hard not to covet this smart, sharp-looking new device.
With boutique design, remote monitoring via mobile device, and the ability to wave off false alarms with your hand, the ; is the smoke/CO detector we never knew we wanted.
$129 is a lot to ask for a smoke/CO detector, even a connected one.
Nest brings crisp design and smart features -- connected and otherwise -- to the humble smoke detector. You don't absolutely need the Nest Protect, but it's fine to admit you want one.

A Wi-Fi connected smoke and carbon monoxide detector
Works with iOS or Android app ; Attractive design ; Heads-Up voice feature
Expensive ; Not available in Australia yet
The Nest Protect is a smoke and carbon monoxide detector that allows users to control its settings and check its battery life using a dedicated iOS or Android app. Unfortunately, it's not available in Australia just yet and it's also expensive.

Functional and far smarter than your old smoke detector, the Nest Protect is back -- minus the gesture recognition. But more work is still need to make the smart home truly brilliant.

The Protect brings plenty of innovation to the staid world of smoke detectors, but the $99 price will be too steep for many people to swallow.
Remote control via a mobile app ; Clever uses of color notifications ; Sleek design
Expensive for a smoke detector
