Ecobee3 Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, HomeKit-enabled review

Toronto-based Ecobee may not have the name recognition of Honeywell or Nest , but it was actually the first company to come out with an app-enabled thermostat. Its initial line of smart thermostats was funneled through dealers though, which limited the...

The $249 Ecobee3 comes with an installation workaround in case your system doesn't have a C wire, as well as a remote sensor that extends its temperature-and-motion-sensing range.

Many existing HVACs don't have or need a C wire, and Ecobee's fix isn't for novices.

While the Ecobee3 doesn't quite match the design and usability of the Nest Learning Thermostat, it is definitely worthy of your consideration.

The Ecobee3 Lite is a decent smart thermostat that costs less than most

But depending on your home's layout, you may miss the remote sensor support.

Your home's layout and size will ultimately guide you to decide which device will serve you best. Larger multifloor homes may be better served with the Ecobee3, while smaller abodes could get by with the Ecobee3 Lite. Either one is simple to use and...

Alexa, Siri, IFTTT: This smart thermostat works with 'em all

The Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat offers all of the connected home integrations you need for just $169.

A responsive touchscreen and integrations with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Wink and IFTTT give the lower-priced $169 Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat serious appeal.

"Smart" is a bit of a stretch for the Ecobee3 Lite, since it doesn't rely on activity-tracking sensors or any other sort of adaptive tech to learn your routine. $169 is still a lot to spend, especially on a programmable thermostat.

No other Wi-Fi thermostat available today offers this many smart home partnerships for this low of a price, but you should weigh the importance of the integrations against the MSRP -- many 7-day app-enabled programmable thermostats cost just $100.

Ecobee3 Smart WiFi Thermostat

The Ecobee3 is a stylish Wi-Fi thermostat that you can control from anywhere, and it uses remote sensors to control the temperature of multiple rooms in your house.

Easy to install and configure. Android, iOS, and Web browser support. Remote sensors. Sleek design.

Temperature slider can be tricky. Cannot monitor remote room temperature.

Conclusions Like our previous Editors' Choice, the Nest Learning thermostat, the Ecobee3 is a well-designed Wi-Fi thermostat that lets you control your heating and air conditioning system from your smartphone and provides graphical usage reports. Both...

Ecobee3 Lite smart thermostat review: The lower price comes at the expense of a signature feature

You can add remote sensors to Ecobee's budget-priced smart thermostat, but it's probably not cost effective to do so.

Same great Ecobee design and user interface ; Can work with remote sensors (but they're optional) ; Works with Amazon Echo, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings

Not to be belabor the point, but the sensors that make the Ecobee series special cost extra with this model ; A little overpriced compared to direct competition ; Not compatible with Google Home

Ecobee3 smart thermostat review: It’s all about that sensor

The Ecobee3 works differently than the rest, which is its greatest strength.

Remote sensors help to make the entire house comfortable, not just the location the thermostat is in ; Easy set-up and installation (provided you have a C-wire) ; Great touchscreen interface ; Excellent data tracking and reporting

Requires a C-wire or else rather daunting installation of a wiring adapter kit ; Remote sensors can be configured only at the thermostat, not via the app ; Geofencing depends on an IFTTT channel ; Pricey

For dealing with a house with distinct hot and cold spots, the Ecobee3 is easily the best choice. The addition of the remote sensors enables you to track and compensate for temperature changes throughout the house. While it’s not a perfect solution,...

Ecobee3 Lite Review: A Good Smart Thermostat for Small Apartments

The $169 Ecobee3 Lite is a great midrange smart thermostat for those who don't want—or don't want to pay—for all of the features of the Ecobee3 or 4. makes the most sense for someone who has, say, a studio or one-bedroom apartment, . The Honeywell...

Works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit ; Attractive interface ; Easy installation ; works with remote sensors

Lacks geofencing

The Ecobee3 Lite lacks some of the features of its premium cousin, but it’s a good choice for small apartments.

Ecobee3 Review

Remote sensor makes it the best for homes that have large temperature gradients throughout

Stylish, remote sensors

Expensive, average to use

While the addition of external sensors is intriguing, we felt that this model fell a little short when compared to its competitors. We can really only think of the situation where you are forced to install the thermostat in a location that has a...

Ecobee3 Thermostat Review

The smartest of the smart thermostats, the ecobee3, can be paired with remote sensors so that all your rooms get heated or cooled properly. Plus, it's the only one that works with Apple's HomeKit.

Intuitive ; Remote sensor lets you monitor temperature in more than one room ; Works with IFTTT ; Works with HomeKit

Installation can be tricky

A remote sensor lets the Ecobee3 smart thermostat monitor the temperature in more than one room in your house.
