Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 review: a classy outdoors smartwatch for explorers

Despite some issues, the Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 appeals as a Wear OS watch for exploring the great outdoors with.

Excellent mapping and GPS ; One of the most robust smartwatches ; Innovative dual-layer display

Battery life could be better ; No NFC or heart rate monitoring ; Will be too chunky for some

Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 review

Interesting, but flawed

Clever two-layer screen ; Smart hiker software features ; Tough casing

Poorly designed charger ; Slow charging ; No heart rate monitor or NFC

The Casio Pro Trek WSD F30 has a much better design than its predecessor, but the combination of hiking and Wear OS is still an awkward one.

Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 review: WearOS for the great outdoors

Casio has updated its Pro Trek outdoors smartwatch, giving longer battery, a slimmer package and lots more information.

Solid and durable build ; Always-visible time ; Lots of sensor data for hiking/outdoor sports ; Good battery life

No heart-rate sensor ; No companion app for activity syncing/viewing ; Charging plug and port disconnect easily

Casio's third-gen dual-screen outdoors watch caters for a specific market well, but its dual-screen USP is no longer unique, while strong competition and lack of heart-rate sensor limit its overall appeal.

Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 review

Has this rugged ticker got the skills to please Bear Grylls?

Tougher than a brigadier’s boots ; Packs GPS and plenty of sensors ; Dual-layer display works deftly

Interface can be idiosyncratic ; Battery life is only average ; Still no home for activity history ; Magnetic charger disconnects easily

Big, bold and built to go the distance, Casio’s sturdy smartwatch has all the tools to make it great but needs software tweaks reach the summit

Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 review: Rugged credentials, fiddly design

Despite its impressive outdoor credentials, a frustrating user experience prevents the WSD-F30 from reaching its potential

Robust MIL-STD build ; Compass and altimeter ; Some innovative features

Casio apps are confusing ; Terrible charger design ; No HR monitor

There’s no smartwatch quite like the Casio WSD-F30 but, if you can forgo the MIL-spec credentials, I’d recommend the slightly pricier Garmin Fenix 5 Plus instead. Alternatively, if a tough Wear OS watch is all you need, you can save a lot of money by...

Casio PRO TREK SMART WSD-F30 Review

Most of the Wear OS smartwatches favor casual-looking designs that make them suitable to wear for different occasions. However, the Casio PRO TREK SMART WSD-F30 bucks the trend by favoring utility more than anything else...

A very different-looking sporty design; Ruggedized construction makes it feel solid; Dual-layer screen offers exception visibility in direct sunlight; Precise GPS; Above average battery life

It’s really expensive; Chunky size isn’t for everyone; Lacks heart rate sensor
