Amazon's best tablet yet is still let down by the disappointing app support

Amazon's 7-inch Kindle Fire excels at one thing: Amazon

Mayday is innovative ; Great screen ; Fast performance

Dark spots on screen ; Poor browser ; Dated games

If you're heavily invested in Amazon's ecosystem, or want a hassle free (yet limited) UI, the Kindle HDX 7 could be the perfect tablet, but anyone looking for flexibility in their slate needs to look elsewhere.

The Amazon Kindle HDX 7 is an excellent tablet made with Amazon users in mind, but Android fans could find it a little restrictive

Stunning screen ; Lightweight design ; Detailed music performance ; Fast ; Mayday customer service is nice touch ; Good battery life

Locked into the Amazon ecosystem ; No access to Google Play

Great display, plenty of power, great sound quality, competitive price, some interesting software features

Lack of Google Play support means very little parity with the rest of Android, design might not be for some, no native movie/TV downloads from Lovefilm is a limitation

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX does a lot to make itself a competitive offering. The detail in the display and the power on offer, for the price, make the Fire HDX a compelling choice of 7-inch tablet. It also offers excellent speaker performance.

Choosing which tablet to buy has never been harder than now, when there are so many high-quality models at very different prices. Tesco's £119 Hudl has proved amazingly popular despite not having the best screen in the world.

The Fire HDX is an accomplished tablet with excellent performance and a great screen, but one that suffers from a couple of problematic flaws. The blue light leakage will annoy some people who like to read a lot, while the lack of apps will trip up...
