Microsoft Surface Pro 9 review: a truly transformable 2-in-1 laptop

 

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 can be used just as comfortably as a laptop as it can a tablet

Easy to use as a tablet ; 13-inch PixelSense Flow display ; Uses Windows 11 ; Available in a 5G option

Not as powerful as elsewhere ; Lacks an SD card slot and extra ports ; Surface Pro Signature Keyboard comes separately

If you want a tablet that you can use just as easily for computing, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is a great choice. It may not pack the same level of power as more traditional laptops but it's also much more lightweight than any of those.

An excellent work companion with some issues

Excellent design ; Big, responsive screen ; Great battery life ; Built-in 5G ; Surface Pro Signature Keyboard Cover and Slim Pen 2 are perfect companions

ARM introduces some system compatibility and stability issues ; You'll pay extra for the keyboard and pen you want and need ; Expensive

With its bigger screen, nested and slim pencil, and day-beating battery life, the Surface Pro 9 5G moves Microsoft's Surface line in the right direction, but the custom ARM chip brings with it a host of hiccups.

The Surface Pro 9 offers decent performance underneath the remarkably sleek shell if you pick carefully

Excellent on-the-go-performance ; Lightweight, full-fat computing ; Brilliant display

Can get expensive ; Stylus and keyboard add to cost ; ARM model needs better app support

Excellent performance throughout. You’ll be beguiled by the gorgeous screen and lightweight design. Though you should avoid the ARM-based model. And things can get quite expensive quite quickly.

The ARM-based Surface Pro 9 is an exciting step for Microsoft's flagship 2-in-1, but most people will be better off with the Intel model

Stellar battery life ; Gorgeous design and screen ; Great keyboard and pen experience ; Excellent webcam with extra ARM features

Underwhelming performance ; Poor port selection ; Not all apps are compatible with ARM ; Expensive, with keyboard still sold separately

The ARM-based model of the Surface Pro 9 is one of the best devices you shouldn’t buy, with superb battery life and extra webcam features let down by a clear drop in performance and reduced app compatibility. Go for the Intel version instead.

The Surface Pro 9 isn't a huge update, but it gets Intel's newest 12th Gen Core processors that are supposed to be faster and more efficient. So let's see if the new Surface Pro 9 runs any faster and lasts any longer.

Excellent, high refresh rate display ; Good performance ; Thunderbolt 4/USB4 USB-C ports ; Can truly be used as a tablet ; Thin and light

Pricey ; Accessories sold separately ; Only two USB-C ports ; Smaller battery, reduced battery life

The TL;DR version: This is still one of, if not the best 2-in-1 ultraportable Windows device you can buy. The only stumbling block is its high price.
