Lytro Illum

Focus your shots, after taking them

Capable of amazing effects ; Much higher resolution than first Lytro ; Offers good control

Slow software processing ; Very expensive ; Resulting images remain low-res

The third, but perhaps least interesting, results you can produce are stereoscopic 3D JPS files.

Why focus before taking the shot when you can do it afterwards?

Huge fun to use ; Produces unique 'living images' ; Intuitive controls

Expensive ; Rather awkward handling ; Small image size

It's great fun producing images that can be refocused, but there's a high cost and the images can only be viewed at fairly small size, but it's just possible that this is a taste of the future of photography.

Meet the insane sci-fi camera that never takes an out-of-focus shot

Living pictures are pretty amazing ; Forces you to approach photography in a new way ; Desktop app allows extensive editing

Slow startup time ; Not great in low light

By no means an essential purchase, but proof that light field cameras can be viable consumer products

In today's world we're accustomed to safety nets. Image stabilisation helps tame camera shake and RAWs allows you to correct exposure errors. Lytro's latest Illum offers a different fail-safe altogether, as the Light Field camera allows you to change...

At 4Mp, the Illum has four times the resolution of its predecessor, and if the next model is four times greater than this, then we can see Light Field technology really taking off. But for now, you’re paying £1299 for a camera that’s beaten for picture...

Lytro Illum review

Sure, the Lytro Illum's ability to refocus an image is still cool, but it's not enough to justify the high price and so-so image quality.

We had high hopes for the Illum, since the light-field technology really wowed us at the beginning. Granted, the technology is still nascent and one to watch, and Lytro has promised more products are on the way. (We could also see the technology in...
