Lytro Illum

Focus your shots, after taking them

Capable of amazing effects ; Much higher resolution than first Lytro ; Offers good control

Slow software processing ; Very expensive ; Resulting images remain low-res

The third, but perhaps least interesting, results you can produce are stereoscopic 3D JPS files.

Lytro Illum review

Why focus before taking the shot when you can do it afterwards?

Huge fun to use ; Produces unique 'living images' ; Intuitive controls

Expensive ; Rather awkward handling ; Small image size

It's great fun producing images that can be refocused, but there's a high cost and the images can only be viewed at fairly small size, but it's just possible that this is a taste of the future of photography.

Lytro Illum review

Sure, the Lytro Illum's ability to refocus an image is still cool, but it's not enough to justify the high price and so-so image quality.

We had high hopes for the Illum, since the light-field technology really wowed us at the beginning. Granted, the technology is still nascent and one to watch, and Lytro has promised more products are on the way. (We could also see the technology in...

Lytro Illum

The Lytro Illum lures buyers with the promise of refocusable images, but its image quality is disappointing and its price sky high.

Stunning industrial design. Long zoom range. Sharp, tilting touch-screen display. Constant f/2 aperture lens.

The rear LCD is mounted on a hinge, which is useful for capturing images from low and high angles alike. But it doesn't face all the way forward for light-field selfies. It's larger than the displays that you'll find on most digital cameras—4 inches...

Lytro Illum review: this is the camera of the future

Ten minutes into using the Lytro Illum, I'm throwing out everything I've ever learned about photography. Taking great photos with this camera has a different set of rules, a different guiding...

Cool, futuristic design ; Light-field photography is the future ; Helpful tools for showing you how to shoot ; Perfect shots feel like magic

Hardware and software both way too buggy ; Expensive ; Images are heavy, and slow to import and edit ; Misses the perfect image more often than it gets it

A glimpse at the future — not at your next purchase

While the more cautious and cynical might harbour a suspicion that this thus-far-unique device could turn out to be an expensive toy for someone – the photographer who has everything perhaps - its territory feels so uncharted that in truth we ran the...
