Acer Aspire S5

A super-thin, premium Ultrabook that hides its connections with an innovative motorised door.

Incredibly slim ; Attractive, innovative design ; MagicFlip has major geek appeal ; Thunderbolt on board ; Impressive speakers ; Good usability

Poor screen ; Awkward connectivity ; No keyboard backlighting ; Expensive

. It makes USB devices awkward to plug in and exposes them to possible damage when picking the laptop up or putting it down at a slight angle.

Acer Aspire S5 review

The world's thinnest Ultrabook packs power and style

Great performance ; World's slimmest laptop ; Eye catching ; Nice metal finish ; Thunderbolt

Small SSD ; Durability issues ; Ports hard to access ; Mediocre graphics ; Average screen

Ultrabooks are more than a simple size-zero battle of aggressive laptop dieting, but that hasn't stopped manufacturers from battling it out for the 'World's thinnest' accolade. The Asus Zenbook UX31E, Acer Aspire S3, Dell XPS 13 and Samsung Series 9...

Acer S5 Aspire Ultrabook review: Hands-on

Amid a sea of size zero notbooks, Acer's latest Ultrabook is the thinnest yet. With a sleek, premium design and the cool Magic Flip I/O feature could it be our favourite MacBook Air rival?

This laptop was named the best at CES by some publications and at this early stage it's difficult to argue. It appears to hit all of the right Ultrabook notes with long battery life and the ergonomic design craved in the post MacBook Air era. The Magic...

Acer Aspire S5-391 review

Acer might have made budget-oriented workhorses in the past, but its new laptops are much classier affairs. None more so than the Aspire S5, a great-looking Ultrabook built from black brushed aluminium. It's also the first Ultrabook we've seen with a...

Acer Aspire S5 video review

The Acer Aspire S5-391-53314G25akk, to give it its full name, is the first commercially available Windows PC in the UK of any type to sport this versatile connector.

Acer Aspire S5 review

The Acer Aspire S5 is a special kind of ultraportable notebook. That's not for its shape or style though – building a clone of the Apple MacBook Air is rapidly becoming passé for Microsoft's hardware partners.

We applaud the addition of Thunderbolt, which expands connection possibilites with a growing range of high-speed peripherals. MagicFlip, the motorised port bay is also a very neat idea, if applied with an annoying mechanism that always sounds stressed....

Acer S5-391-9880 review

It was back in January, at CES 2012 , that we first saw the $1,399 13-inch Acer Aspire S5 ultrabook. Of course, if you remember the S5 from CES, you'll recall its most unique feature -- a tiny motorized door at the back of the bottom panel that opens...

The Acer Aspire S5 is an incredibly thin and light ultrabook that hides its ports, including Thunderbolt, behind a clever motorized door.

That port door, named the MagicFlip, is a potential problem if it ever breaks down. The keyboard isn't backlit, and battery life could be better.

Even thinner and lighter than a 13-inch MacBook Air, the Acer Aspire S5 is a great example of an ambitious ultrabook, held back by a few flaws and its high price.

Acer Aspire S5 review

If you're looking for an Ultrabook with the superslim good looks of a MacBook Air, enough computing oomph to handle multimedia and general business tasks, plus a good-enough battery life, take a long hard look at the Acer Aspire S5. Especially the...

The sleekly designed Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook poses one of the most credible threats to the MacBook Air we've seen to date.

Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook

A high-performing Ultrabook with a port cluster and vent that can be opened and closed at the press of a button

Performance ; Small and light ; Innovative

Relatively short battery life ; Power button location ; Screen viewing angles ; Keyboard not backlit ; Dual-SSD model not sold in Australia

Acer's Aspire S5 Ultrabook contains innovation and plenty of speed. The model we looked at was equipped with a Core i7 CPU and two solid state drives in a RAID 0 configuration. It's an ultraportable that's suitable for anyone who wants great overall...
