HP Omen 17 review

A monster of a gaming laptop that's relatively affordable

Affordable price ; 4K, G-Sync Display

Plastic-y build ; Large physical Size

Sacrifices in the HP Omen 17's fit and finish are a small trade-off for the graphical prowess it's capable of.

HP Omen 17 review

The 17-inch HP Omen hits the sweet spot. There are laptops with greater graphical grunt, but they're mostly either heavier or more expensive. There are thinner, lighter laptops, but they're mostly either less powerful or, yet again, more expensive. The...

The HP Omen 17 comes in a wide range of configurations, most of which offer good graphical bang for your buck.

The 4K variant has poor battery life, no option for a Nvidia GeForce 1080 GPU.

It's not the most powerful gaming laptop out there, nor the slimmest one, but it's among the best combinations of price, screen size and performance.

HP Omen 17 review

Hardcore gaming in a go-anywhere shell: can HP's Omen deliver?

Stacks of power to deal with almost anything at Full HD resolutions ; Handles VR surprisingly well ; Outputs to monitors without complaint

Build feels plasticky and creaky ; Screen is washed-out ; Ridiculously bulky and heavy ; 90-minute gaming battery life on average

A consummate gaming machine with a shoddy build, there are cheaper, prettier ways to enjoy VR

HP Omen (17-inch) review: It's all about what's on the inside

What it lacks in flashy design or extras, this big-screen gamer makes up for in performance.

The 17-inch HP Omen is available in several configurations depending on your needs and budget. Reasonably priced even with its top-end, VR-ready version. Low-key design and good battery life compared to other gaming systems. Nice ultra HD-resolution...

Lacks the flashy design or macro/shortcut keys found on other gaming laptops. Can get hot and loud under load. No USB-C ports. No touchscreen.

The 17-inch HP Omen might not look aggressive, but you'll have no problems taking down the competition with this fully loaded gaming laptop.

HP's 4K Omen 17 has good gaming graphics at a great price

Nvidia GeForce 1070 graphics in a 17-inch laptop for $1,700. Those numbers add up well.

The 4K variant has poor battery life, no option for a Nvidia GeForce 1080 GPU.

HP Omen 17 (2017) review: You get a lot of gaming laptop for the money

An updated design fixes some flaws in last year's Omen gaming laptop, but the real selling point is still its great value.

Great specs for the price ; Nice build quality

Mediocre touchpad ; Sound quality not up to par with other big gaming laptops

The 2017 version of the HP Omen 17-inch gaming laptop is a small but welcome update from . It still has some room to grow, with “just okay” audio and a “just okay” touchpad, along with a rather pedestrian aesthetic. But at least it’s not nearly as...

HP Omen 17 (2017)

The new HP Omen 17 bears a new exterior design and fast gaming performance, but is largely same as last year's on the inside and carries a higher price tag.

Fast gaming performance. 4K display good for media viewing. Plenty of ports.

Expensive for components and build. GTX 1070 isn't powerful enough for gaming on the 4K screen.

Bottom Line: The new HP Omen 17 is still good for gaming, but the high price tag and minimal improvements over its predecessor make it a questionable buy.

HP Omen 17

The HP Omen 17 brings Nvidia's Pascal graphics, a 4K display, plenty of storage, and excellent performance to the midrange price tier, making it a good gaming laptop that is also a good value.

Attractive pricing. 4K display. Strong gaming performance. High storage capacity. Appealing, relatively slim design.

Plastic body. So-so touchpad.

Conclusion For a very reasonable price given the 4K display and the GTX 1070, the HP Omen 17 is an attractive proposition. Its performance is on par with or better than you'll see from midrange gaming laptops that cost more, many of which can't match...

HP Omen 17 Review

The HP Omen offers stunning good looks, powerful specs and a lovely 4K monitor that's ideal for gaming.

Avant-garde design; Powerful overall and excellent graphics performance; Fast transfer speeds; Vivid display; Upgradable specs;

Below-average battery life; Plastic, instead of aluminum lid;
