The Sony VAIO VPC-SE16FX/S laptop is a compelling package, with a commuter-friendly thin design, a high-definition display, and a potent combination of processing and graphics hardware.

Slim, lightweight design. Widescreen 1080p display. Automatic brightness and backlight adjustment. Intel Core i5 CPU and AMD discrete graphics makes for a powerful combination. Blu-ray player. WiDi 2.0.

Needs an extra battery for real endurance. Small touches, like the keyboard and touchpad, felt unrefined.

The discrete graphics and optional slice battery on the stylish ; help it stand out from other midsize laptops, and the included TPM chip should play nice with your IT department.

The AMD graphics switching remains tied to a clunky physical switch, and without the extra slice, battery life is merely OK.

Sony knocks out another stylish system with the 15-inch Vaio SE, with some extra appeal for business users.
