Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 review

Now that ultrabooks have hit the mainstream, the evolution of slimmer laptops has started to undergo Darwinian mutation. Consider the oddity that is the Toshiba Satellite U845W: a compact Core i5 ultrabook that has a ridiculously wide 21:9-ratio...

A clean design, impressive-sounding speakers, an extra-large 14.4-inch wide-screen display, and good battery life make the Toshiba Satellite U845W a solid ultrabook with some notable extras.

That extra-wide screen, when it works with movie files, can be fun; but many streaming video services don't play nicely, and the U845W lacks a DVD player. The screen height is smaller than the average 13-inch laptop, and the keyboard is not that...

The media-geared Toshiba Satellite U845W has an extra-wide 21:9 screen and Harman Kardon speakers, but no DVD or Blu-ray player. The screen is a novelty act that offers some benefits, but it's really no better than your standard laptop for most uses.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 review

The U845W ultimately shapes up as an executive toy rather than as a serious attempt to address the needs of mobile film buffs. The 21:9 display comes across as a gimmick, especially when you factor in the omission of Blu-ray even as an option. You can...

Toshiba Satellite U845 review: an inexpensive Ultrabook worth considering

As a mid-range Ultrabook, the 14-inch U845 isn't a slam dunk, but it's definitely worth a look.

If you're in the market for a thin and light, not-too-expensive laptop, the Toshiba Satellite U845 isn't exactly a slam dunk, but it's certainly worth considering. While the build quality, battery life and overall performance are about on par with...

Toshiba Satellite U845W

More Info Toshiba outs Satellite U845W Ultrabook with 14.4-inch, 21:9 display (updated: $999 and up in the US) The Ultrabooks of Computex 2012 Toshiba bows out of netbooks in the US, sees Ultrabooks as the wave of the future Ultrabooks now come in...

Powerful speakers ; Attractive design ; Decent battery life for a 14-inch laptop

Uncomfortable keyboard ; Flaky trackpad ; Display not compatible with most media

The U845W Ultrabook is the first laptop with a 21:9 display, but ultimately its odd, outsized dimensions are more of a nuisance than a boon.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430

While it's a relatively decent performer, the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 falls short of ultrabook greatness by hinging almost entirely on a wider display whose utility is questionable.

Wider display complements Windows 8's interface. Brushed aluminum finish and soft-touch texturing make for a handsome look.

Wider screen is of limited utility. No optical drive. Shallow travel on the keyboard. No touch screen. Some bloatware.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 review: No touch, but a very long screen

This ultra-wide-screen ultrabook gets Windows 8 grafted on, but it isn't the type of experimental Windows 8 laptop you're looking for.

The wide-screen ; has an extra-long, higher-resolution screen, Harman Kardon speakers that pack a punch, and an attractive, compact design with plenty of ports.

The keyboard and touch pad are uncomfortable, the wide screen isn't a perfect marriage with Windows 8, and the screen doesn’t always play nicely with all streaming video content.

Toshiba's experimental extra-wide-screen ultrabook gets a Windows 8 software upgrade, but it turns the Toshiba Satellite U845W into a computer imperfectly matched for what Windows 8 has to offer.

Toshiba Satellite U845-S406

The Toshiba Satellite U840-S406 doesn't reinvent the wheel but is nonetheless a decent system for users looking for a well-designed, reasonably priced ultrabook for day-to-day use.

Full-sized HDMI port. Sleek chassis. USB 3.0 port charges peripherals when in sleep mode.

Battery can't be removed. Mediocre battery life. Loaded with bloatware.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410

The Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 ultrabook will attract movie lovers craving extra-widescreen entertainment, but the 21:9 display winds up being more of an inconvenient gimmick than a feature.

Extra-wide 21:9 screen is a boon for movie-lovers. Harman/Kardon speakers sound great.

Display is wonky for everything but widescreen movies. Bloatware. Inconvenient dimensions.

Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 Review: Affordable Office Power on the Go

The Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 is a reasonably priced ultraportable laptop that still manages to pack quite a punch.

Very good multitouch touchpad ; Bluetooth enabled

Limited port configuration ; SSD only for system use

The Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 is a thin, light, affordable system that will work well for business users on the go.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 Review: An Ultrabook for Film Buffs

This is a unique time in the PC business. After years of turning out boring, 15.6-inch laptops and midsize-tower desktop PCs, PC makers are experimenting with new and intriguing designs. Case in point: the Toshiba Satellite U845W. Available in two...

Unique, widescreen display ; Excellent audio quality

Keyboard lacks feedback; touchpad too sensitive ; Display colors seem muted; limited viewing angles

This elegant-looking laptop targets movie buffs, but it's not a good choice for productivity or gaming.
