Toshiba Satellite U920t

An affordable Windows 8 sliding laptop/tablet hybrid with good battery life.

Relatively affordable ; Sturdy and pleasant to the touch ; Flexible specs with up to Core i5 and 8GB RAM ; Superior battery life to rivals ; Great speakers

Awkward sliding action ; Average typing experience and touchpad ; Bog-standard screen res with poor viewing angles for IPS ; No optional digitizer stylus

sibling, which is certainly no bad thing. Just like with the ultra-wide Ultrabook, the U920t has a textured soft-touch finish on its base and wrist-rest area. The former provides extra grip when this hybrid is parked on your lap and when carrying it...

Toshiba Satellite U920T review

Can Toshiba's hybrid take the market by storm?

Long battery ; Nice laptop design ; Decent connectivity ; Trackpad

Chunky ; Heavy ; Dull screen ; Lack of refinement

The hybrid laptop-tablet form factor has well and truly kicked off, and you'd be hard pressed to walk into your local electronics superstore and find a bog-standard laptop between the rows of flipping, sliding, swivelling, touchscreen, Windows 8 hybrids.

Apart from crowds, cheap cola and stressed journalists, the next most likely thing you'll see at this year's IFA is some kind of hybrid laptop and

Toshiba Satellite U920T review

At first, the Toshiba U920t looks like a regular tablet, albeit a large one at nearly 1.5kg in weight and 22mm in size. You can use Windows 8 via the 12.5in touchscreen, just like you would with the Microsoft Surface RT, another Windows 8 tablet.

The Toshiba U920T is certainly an interesting product. We haven't had long with it so we'll reserve judgement until we get it into the PC Advisor lab.

Toshiba Satellite U920T review

A powerful but clunky 12.5in hybrid device running Windows 8.

Good battery; Decent performance; Lots of connectivity

Too heavy to be a tablet; Average screen; Price of a laptop

The Toshiba Satellite U920T isn’t the best hybrid device out there. It does offer more functionality than the Surface RT, but is simply too heavy to be used a tablet as you cannot undock the keyboard.

Toshiba Satellite U920T hybrid review

Toshiba's first attempt to break into the fast-growing Windows 8hybrid market is a slightly weird beast, with a love-it-or-hate-ittransformation mechanism, that marks it as distinctive, but won'tbe practical enough for everyone.

Wired: Decent performance for the price, distinctive look

Tired: Screen not full HD, weird transforming method, heavy fora tablet

Toshiba Satellite U920T hybrid Ultrabook review

Turning the U920T from a tablet to a notebook is not difficult, but it could get tiring over time, and we're not sure how well the mechanics of the design will hold up over prolonged use. Also, the on-screen keyboard doesn't work too well when in the...

Toshiba Satellite U920T review

Can the Toshiba Satellite U920T, a hybrid device that's part-ultrabook-part-tablet, successfully consolidate two devices into one and actually pull it off? It's a big ask and the price is rather high compared to your average tablet device but that...

Portable, Lots of processing power, Touchscreen is responsive, HDMI, Decent battery life

Far too heavy in tablet mode, Design won't appeal to everybody's tastes, Rather expensive as a tablet replacement, Rubbish cameras - both on the front and rear

The Toshiba Satellite U920T is solid performer suited to heavy workloads and a busy schedule. But like the vast majority of Windows 8 hybrid devices now available the U920T falls short of being a truly dualistic machine.

Toshiba Satellite U920T hybrid Ultrabook

This Windows 8 hybrid Ultrabook is a tablet that can be transformed into a laptop thanks to a sliding screen mechanism

Equally useful as a laptop or a tablet ; Full-sized HDMI ; Two USB 3.0 ports ; Good overall performance and battery life

Screen isn't Full HD ; Sliding mechanism can get tiring over time ; Takes a while to get used to the design ; Single-band Wi-Fi

Toshiba's U920T sliding-screen hybrid Ultrabook is a neat concept that takes some getting used to. It's a hybrid that's fun to use as a tablet and it works equally well as a notebook. However, we're not sure how well the screen's mechanism will last...
