The Google Nexus 7, reborn with a metal body and memory card slot.
Fab value ; Flexible, with 3G and memory expansion ; Highly portable
Sluggish GPU ; So-so screen ; Performance just OK
Low-cost tablets released later this year are likely to provide higher resolutions and superior image ‘pop’. However, you can tweak this with the Asus Splendid app, which lets you alter colour saturation and tone.

Asus flexes its hybrid muscle once again with a 7-inch tablet that makes calls
Great LED-backlit screen ; microSD storage ; Premium metal chassis ; Good battery life
No rear camera ; Poor speakers ; Nexus 7 cheaper ; Impractical for calls
The latest creation rolling off the production line at Asus is the Asus FonePad: a 7-inch Android tablet that can make and receive phone calls.

Samsung, LG, ZTE, and Huawei have all produced devices that begin to blur the lines between phones and tablets, so why wouldn't Asus jump on...

Do you desperately want to own a smartphone and a tablet but just don't have the money to afford both? Well the Fonepad might just be the thing for you.
For those genuinely interested in a phablet, the Asus Fonepad is a bit of a bargain. It does the job of two devices for a budget price. However, you'll need to be prepared to make sacrifices including practicality and, in this case, no rear camera and...

It is a 7in tablet, a thin black slab that looks a lot like the Nexus 7. The subtle difference on the front is the ear-piece so you can hear the person on the other end of the phone.

The Asus Fonepad; big phone, little price-tag. Made by the same guys who put together the excellent Google Nexus 7, the Fonepad sports a very similar design, but it's a phone. Yes. A 7-inch, larger…
Incredible value ; Great screen ; 3G / voice capability ; Expandability
Bloated UI ; Occasional lag ; Ergonomically not a phone ; Poor stock keyboard

The Rock, Andre the Giant and the Incredible Hulk: three monstrous behemoths who could happily hold a 7in device to their faces without looking ridiculous. But for the rest of us mere mortals, we have to wonder where a 7in phone-capable tablet...

Asus has never shied away from trying variations on popularthemes. The Transformer Pad gave us one of the firsttablet/laptop hybrids with a detachable screen;the Taichi was a laptop with not one, but twoscreens. The Fonepad (not to be confused with the...
Decent screen, 3G phone and internet access, picture-in-pictureapps
No main camera
The Asus Fonepad distinguishes itself by being one of the fewseven-inch tablets with 3G phone and internet access. Virtuallyunlimited internet access without the need to rely on a Wi-Ficonnection is a good selling point, the outsize phone optionperhaps...

Best 7in tablet on the market, but far too big to make calls
Good price, decent performance, nice design, vanilla Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, plenty of storage
No rear-facing camera, screen a little disappointing
When it comes to 7in tablets, there's a lot of choice already on the market, although arguably the Asus Fonepad is the most appealing of the bunch right now. Yes, it's physically too big to be used as a phone but you could always plug in a headset, and...
