Turn your living room into the Tate with Philips' stunner
Original and outstanding appearance ; Speedy reaction times
Expensive
Looks great and performs like a dream - this is surely about as good as LCD gets

Philips flagship model 42PF9831D 42-inch LCD TV is something a bit different for home cinema fanatics. Arriving in a box easily big enough for a 50-inch plasma screen is exciting enough, but not as surprising as opening it and not feeling let down to...
It looks fantastic, HD performance is excellent, a massive range of connectivity including HDMI, USB and Ethernet ports, HD up to 1080i
You really need HD to get the most from this LCD, it is quite, no 1080p support, expensive, fairly bulky
Philips has got just about everything right with the 42PF, it’s not the cheapest 42” LCD out there by a long shot, but you get so much for your money it’s almost impossible not to recommend it.

A super screen at a super price, but don't be put off by the overall size
Fantastic picture quality ; Ambilight technology is easy on the eye ; fairly cheap considering its size
It is a bit of a heffer, though

It's very expensive, but Philips' latest 42-inch LCD fully justifies the price tag with a wealth of innovations to improve picture quality and the overall viewing experience. Chief of these is the Ambilight back-lighting, which produces an...
Picture quality; design; the Ambilight system; connectivity; audio; features.
Occasional artefacting; steep price.
Philips' new ClearLCD technology takes big-screen LCD picture performance to a new level, especially with high definition. That this picture prowess is joined by a stunning design and a seemingly endless feature count is just the icing on a...

The two flagship models from Philips, the PF9831D and the PF9731D only accept up to 1080i material, but the latter has a higher resolution of 1920x1080. We are going to look at the 42-inch PF9831D today, with its exclusive Ambilight Full Surround,...

There are far too many other features on this TV for us to cover here, but highlights are ClearLCD, Pixel Plus 3 HD, and a spectacular array of connections. ClearLCD is a new backlight/processing system designed to tackle LCD's twin problems with black...
Mostly sensational pictures, stunning design, amazingly flexible connections, features galore, great sound
The design is rather large and imposing if you prefer your TVs subtle, and the price is 'challenging

Philips? latest lays claim to being the most advanced LCD ever. Let's see about that?
Gorgeous aesthetics, staggering features count, belting audio and the finest HD pictures yet
All these glories don't come cheap, and the digital natural motion processing can cause problems unless you turn it off
While Ambilight might be the most in-your-face of Philips's new features, arguably the most important is ClearLCD. This is a completely new system for improving LCD's motion handling issues, and it's comprised of two main parts. First, a Dimmable...

Excellent picture quality in SD and HD, Innovative picture enhancement technologies
Mediocre PC performance, Bulky unit
While fairly bulky, the 42PF9831 is an excellent panel with high performance in SD and HD.

The 42-inch Philips Flat HDTV (42PF9831D/37) commands the viewer's attention with an adaptive lighting system that surrounds the on-screen action with colors to complement the picture. Dubbed "Ambilight Full Surround," this integrated "bias lighting"...
Audio and image file support. Surround lighting system. Minimal image smearing with video containing fast motion
No backlight control. Weak video-noise reduction. Banding (posterization) noted in fine gradients. Video inputs lack discrete picture settings ; Watch the Philips Flat HDTV (42PF9831D/37) Video Review
The Philips Flat HDTV (42PF9831D/37) grabs the viewer's attention with its colorful surround lighting system, but this HDTV's image quality was mediocre compared with other similarly sized displays I've seen.

Philips 42PF9831D
Unique lighting fully surrounds the screen and can help reduce eyestrain; eye-catching design; slick remote; full feature package including CableCard and picture-in-picture.
Expensive; active lighting can be distracting; much larger than most 42-inch flat-panels; reproduces relatively light blacks; below-average off-angle viewing; no independent input memories; lacks backlight control; no dedicated PC input.
Ringed by glowing colored lights, the Philips 42PF9831D definitely dares to be different, but its high price and not-so-glowing picture quality reduce its appeal.
